Things Learned

Yesterday was only my second time fishing out of a kayak and it was a good one as I caught a few fish and I also learned a few things. First, having an anchor trolley is great. Being able to reposition your boat by just pulling the trolley line was great and makes a huge difference when trying to orientate yourself to cast, etc… Second, I am not yet ready to have two lines in the water. Twice I lost fish trying to juggle two rods. I’ll stick to one at a time. Third, I need to get some better clothing. I had my rain pants on and they were fine initially but, they ended up riding down a little and I ended up with a case of wet butt. I had quick dry pants on but not quick dry underwater. I was a nice day yesterday so other than the discomfort of a wet butt it wasn’t too bad. It would have sucked had it been cold. I’ll need to find better pants and some more appropriate underwear for yak fishing.

All in all it was a really good day and the feeling of pulling up a big red right next to you is a really incredible experience. Thanks to all you veterans who inspired me to try it.

Makes me wonder, what do all you guys wear under your fishing shorts/pants? Seems a shame to go with cotton when wearing the nylon quick dry shorts/pants. Speedo?

I am sold on Patagonia’s capilene boxers and briefs. Quick dry, and stupid comfortable. As it gets colder, Polypro/Capilene long underwear is a must for me!!

x2 on the Patagonia underwear. Ex Officio makes good drawers too.

A lot of those fishing pants have sewn-in mesh underwear…one step up from commando.

When it was warmer, I found going cammando was the most comfortable. When I went a couple of weeks ago and it was a little cooler, I had on some rain paints with some regular shorts and boxers. After a little while went by, I started to get a little uncomfortable, but it was not to bad. Next time I go, I need to get some better stuff to wear.

Yeah, not so sure about going commando when it is cold. Definitely going to get some more appropriate stuff.

You guys wear underwear when you’re in a kayak? When it’s warm I just wear a pair of nylon zip-offs. I think they’re Columbia brand. I figure the less layers to hold water, the better.

Now when it’s cold I intend to wear waterproof pants. An actual dry suit might be better but I don’t have one of them yet.

I have some lycra/spandex swim trunks that come down a few inches below my crotch. They work just fine, but I only use them in cold weather.

X2 on the capilene long underwear. I wear mine darn near every day in the winter. However, I found out that capilene is just a fancy name for polyester. I’m going to try some that cost less than Patagonia.

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.
