Is there any good reason that I should consider TLD’s instead? I really like the looks of the Penns, and honestly, the Senators, Jigmasters, Powergraph, and Slammers are all I’ve ever fished in the salt, so I’m pretty ignorant on the subject.
If you want the bling go gold. If you aren’t concerned as much about the bling and want a tried and true reel go with the TLDs. You can catch anything off our coast with gold or TLDs. Just depends on the look you want.
If you can’t fix it with a hammer, you’ve got an electrical problem.
scootin, the look isn’t the only difference. that being said, i would recommend tlds to most of the fisherman on this website over tiagras or internationals.
and i would recommend tiagras over internationals as well. v series is an improvement, but tiagras are still the leader amongst those who fish for a living.

I agree 100% sir. But not everyone pushes these reels to the limit or to a level that the difference will be noted. I am all for the gold we have 12. But if money is an issue you are much better buying 8 tlds than 4 internationals. Replace the TLDs along and along if you want.

Take a look at Avet 50-wides. I have owned Penn, Tiagra, and Avets. For the money, it’s Avet all the way.
Phin didn’t even have to pay me to say that, either.
Like SFG, said, if you have a smaller purse, then there’s nothing wrong at all with TLD 2-speeds. A great bargain for a very good reel.
“Never argue with an idiot…he will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.”
I’m actually lookin’ for a bargain. Ebay has some good combos that come up w/ the Penns. I never really see any Shimano combos come up that are such a bargain.
I know it may be overkill for my fishing skills (or lack there of) but I figure – do it right the first time. I’ve payed for many things in the past, twice, and I’d rather do it right the first time, this time.
2 speeds are pointless in 99% of situations. i don’t think we’ve used low gear for an adult all year. they are good for young children, but that’s about it. no need to have a 2 speed reel for trolling in SC.
when do you need the low gear? i think people are confused by what the low gear does. it only does two things:
lessens the amount of line retreived per crank by generally 50%
makes it easier to turn the reel
that is it.
The reason for low gear would be VERY big fish and kids/women. Not that we have ever run into this problem off our coast but in theory during a 2 to 3 hour fight the low gear would offer the angler relief late in the battle as the fish begins to tire.
Also one of my bottom fishing buddies uses low gear quite a bit under very high drag application trying to keep big grouper out of holes.
That being said we RARELY use low gear trolling. Pulling in the plainer rod it is nice and once with an older guy fighting a big dolphin that hit the wayback rod.
So are 2 speeds necessary no, but is 1000 yards of line needed, is gold reel really needed?
They are not that much more expensive and the high is higher than the single speed and the low is lower.

What SFG said…low gear is good for turning the head of those big bottom dwellers and keeping them out of the rocks.
I never use it for trolling, and really don’t bottom fish much at all. But like I said…

Buy a set of each and which ever you don’t like I’ll swing down to Camden from up here in Westville and gladly remove out of your way… That way you get exactly what you want…
