I will show you pictures of my Johnson if you promise not to laugh.

Any comments as to the nature of my Johnson’s problem will be greatly appreciated. I hope this is an issue I can resolve without having to seek professional help.
Doubt that is lower unit lube. Looking close at the picture it looks to be coming from above that point. Looks like it is running down the exhaust housing.
I checked the condition of the lower unit gear lube and it was definitely contaminated. Greyish white , not sure if that is a separate issue in and of itself. I am at a loss to determine what the source of the leak is. Possibly the VRO leaking down from the enging compartment ?
I have never sprayed anything on the inside engine compartment. It sounds like there is a consensus that this oil is not coming from the lower unit. I will remove the cowling and check the oil supply line tonight.
I appreciate the light humor, wasn’t sure if any non .mil’s got it.
My Johnson has seen many uncharted destinations, always enjoying life for the moment. I hope all who read this thread learn from my misfortune and always consider the dangers to ones Johnson while experiencing the wonderful flora and fauna of our world.
I your Johnson’s leaking yellow fluids, it needs some Antibiotics, fast!!
Looks like lube vs engine/injection oil to me too.(Like Chris V said)
based on the color. Impeller and seal time. Plus if oil is getting out, water is most likely getting IN, so be careful not to ‘lock her up’
x2 to what Chris V said. My johnson had those problems and I ignored it and ended up having to replace the whole lower unit. Be careful and get it checked out before next use.
stop putting your johnson in strange places unprotected. way too many thing out there to catch these days. but on a serious note Chris V knows his stuff. and chris if he brings it to you just remember his Johnson is infected make sure to wear gloves
grunt question , can you get your johnson up on a plane or does it just kind off idle at a low rep.if the later you need to wrap that rascal to keep from gettin all that white goo all over an take it in to get serviced .Also you need to get that johnson fixed because i know the wife wants to get back out there as soon as possible.keep us posted my good man
After close inspection of the shaft I noticed that some hard crusted salt corrosion had built up around the region where it goes up and down (or in and out, whatever your pleasure). I believe this crusty heterotopic build up on the shaft had caused deterioration of the two o-rings inside the shaft housing. I did not pressure test as recommended by Chris V. not sure how to do that exactly. Plan to change out water pump and several seals that I can get to without too much difficulty.
Lower unit gear lube was definitely contaminated. Plan to flush till clear.
Parts are on order, hope to be back in action this weekend.
OK Seagrunt - my wife says she has a problem with her inboard…something about a V-drive? Sometimes she can’t reach WOT?
I’d like to know more about it, but inboards have been a mystery to me for years. I knew a whole lot more about them when I was 19, but maybe I just didn’t know what I didn’t know.
