I am going this Saturday. Taking my Music Minister and couple of men fom the church. Some have never been offshore. I have lots of numbers but have a simple question. This time of year, If I want to get my limit of (1)snapper/ea. and grouper, how deep should I go?I typically troll so bottom is not my forte.
I see some nice water out near P-Lot…or do I go deeper?
you can sabiki them up around any piling in the harbor. if you use a small chum bag it wont be but a few min before they show up and you can catch them. homework, homework and homework! the time put into prep is relative to your success! a bait ball & cast net will also work and pogys work but are not as hardy. you can catch ars in 40’ now but the bsb’s will drive you nuts, its best to be out in 100’+ so you have a chance at some good groupas too! Good luck and God Bless!
It has been a while since I was out bottom fishing, like two months or so now, but we were BSB free from about 140+ feet out. When we came into about 120’, they were there. We also caught some ARS in 120’, but had to fend off the BSB’s for a while. The ARS’s we did catch hit our intended grouper rigs. So a heavy weight, live bait, sitting on the bottom.
I’ve always had luck getting bait fish from the last two sets of buoys. Markers 1 - 4 out there at the end of the row. Just throw a Sabiki out there under the can, and you’ll catch enough bait. I use them because it’s in the direction I’m going anyway.
dead or cut bait will work, but a hand sized pinfish or beeliner is grouper candy. tip, if you are catching atlantic sharpnose or other sharks you are not anchored on the reef, they prefere the sandy bottom! 10’ can make all the diff. Fish a carolina rig;large circle hook, 6’floro, swivel’ glass bead and egg sinker, size dependent on current and depth.
Thanks for all the advice. I was thinking about going to the parking lot ledge. I see a nice contour starting there. I’ll search out a little deeper. I have some numbers from divers out around 115 to 140.
Once again Thanks
Hopefully I’ll have a good report!
