Thnx for help w/ pisser, can anyone help with this

First of all I want to say thanks for all the suggestions concerning ways to unclog my pisser. I shot water up the hole this morning, then hooked up the muffs, and she was peeing like a champ. However, I took her out today and on the way home she was clogged up again and just trickling out. So I unhooked the hose from the motor, shot the old air compresser and out came a little snail!!! Guess it climbed up there one day when I was parked in a flat. But now I have another issue. I was running along just fine and about 3/4 throttle when all of the sudden motor throttled down on it’s own. It didn’t die, just went to idle. Then I started to throttle up again and it ran for about 100 yards and throttled down again. I let it idle for a couple of minutes and tried again and she ran like a champ all the way home. Any ideas??? I have no clue. My friend suggested it may have been overheating but I never heard an alarm and I don’t have a temp. gauge. It is a 2002 90 HP merc. 2 stroke. Thanks as always. Have a great weekend.

Ethanol fuel has been the #1 culprit lately; but usually won’t idle with that problem. Better PM Chris V on this one, could be a lot of things. The pee problem could have caused it to overheat, and the sensor throttled it down; like you say you would expect an alarm, don’t know.

Have you changed the impeller and gasket since having the motor??

No one knows if YOU are THE village IDIOT or not until YOU open your mouth and speak!!!

do you ever hear the alarm beep?
did the rpms drop to idle, or maybe around 1800

I’m now at www.teamcharlestonmarine.com

The alarm never beeped, and my buddy felt the motor and water coming out and said that it was not hot at all. But honestly, I don’t even know if the alarm works. I just bought it in January. I totally blanked out on the RPM’s, but I would say that it dropped down to idle speed. I was so confused as to why it throttled down like that. I wish I could tell you more. I may try to take it out tomorrow and see if I can get it to do it again.

I had a similar sounding problem with my 115 2-stroke, last year. My alarm (buzzer/bell/whatever) is under the dash and hard to hear while running. It would REALLY help to find your alarm and see if it works. Too good mechanics looked at mine and both concluded the water jackets were probably clogged. That’s the outer covers where the water runs over the heads to cool it. They had to run the boat in the river to test it. They use a heat gun to sample the temperature of jackets. They both said even if you feel the water coming out the pisser and it’s cool that this means just about nothing. The motors are designed to back down before they overheat. Next time I hear my alarm (I hope never) I will buy an infrared thermometer to be able to take temperature readings to give to my mechanic to help determine the problem. Mechanics may have limited time during the summer rush. Just telling him that the heads feel kind of hot or kind of cool is only kind of helpful. So, find your alarm and maybe get a thermometer. And any mechanic please, feel free to correct any of my assumptions. Just trying to help. Oh, and my boat runs GREAT now.

Thanks bigger that is the same thing my neighbor mentioned…My question about motors designed to back down before they overheat is why would the boat run like a dream 30 seconds later and never have another issue for the rest of the day. I really just don’t understand. I would think that if it backs down from overheating that it would either stay down and not let you continue running. I am definitely going to find the alarm system and check it out. Thanks again for the response, it gives me one direction to consider.

Didn’t some people have similar problems caused by faulty primer bulbs and sticking anti-siphon valves?

Mine did exactly like yours. It would/could back down once and run great the rest of the day. My boat was probably often at the edge of running hot but, often ran just fine. The automatic system is going to work at a SPECIFIC temperature and many factors have to be added simultaneously to reach that temperature. I and my mechanic(s) guessed for months. Finally I got one to put the gun on it under load on the water and got the facts. First, find that alarm buzzer thing and go from there.

I changed out the anti-syphon valve a while back and didnt have any trouble until now. I am going to replace the primer bulb and fuel line as well as add a fuel/water seperator. That is definitely on my to do list this week.

I just looked over my owners manual and it doesnt tell me anything about checking the alarms. It shows me where they are, but not how to test. Anyone help me with that??? Thanks

sorry to keep posting but I was just looking at the owner manual and it says that the alarm should beep once when turned to the on position. Does this mean that everytime I turn the motor to the on/run position I should hear an audible beep? Do all Merc.'s do this or is this an application for installation?

I have a Yammy and it beeps when the key is turned on. Just a quick beep each time the key is moved to on.

Thanks Bigger, I really appreciate all of your input and help. I believe mine is supposed to do the same thing.

ive got a 99 90hp merc, no beep when turning the key. had muffs fall off while in the yard a few weeks ago and buzzer went off after a minute or so with no water. alarm wasnt loud at first(didnt notice it) but got louder and louder almost like it was temp sensitive. cut her off when i realized what was going on, no damage, but makes me wonder if it doesnt run excessively hot how loud the buzzer would sound.

cdub, I sent you a quick PM. Keep posting your questions as you have them. I’m sure everybody can learn from the troubleshooting process. You’ll get her working.

Got your PM and I will get back to you about that. I did find a place in the owners manual where it shows me how to test the alarm. My buddy is much better with electronics than I am and I will see if he can help me out today. If not, I will definitely get up with you. Thanks
