Please consider signing this petition. It is an attempt to slow down new release of triplod grass carp into the Santee Cooper system. If anyone is familiar with the recent history of the system would know that the grass carp nearly eliminated all vegetation including natives. Of course, the weedbeds were perfect nurseries for fish larva. If you agree that these grass carp have hurt gamefish on the Santee Cooper system please sign:
I will say this. Hydrilla was insane last time I went there. Perhaps it’s good for the fish to spawn in but makes fishing nearly impossible at the Hatchery. It would be nice if they do something about it.
Do we know how many triploids they stocked (per acre) the last go-round?
I don’t know if you’ve been to Santee lately, but there are some weed problems re-appearing. The grass carp must not eat these types of weeds. Several weeks ago the upper Lake Marion area was ‘Chocked’ full of some type of floating weed (not sure of the name).
I think the weed controversy, will always be a weed controversy in that there has to be some type of balance maintained.
Too many weeds is probably better for the fish & bad for the fisherman and Vice-Versa.
I guess it alls boils down to “Man’s meddling” with Nature too much.
Non-native species of plants & fish being introduced into waters, but there have been cases where this has improved conditions (Striped Bass for example).
