I just recently have gotten into fly tying. I have managed to tie some of the ugliest things you’ve ever laid eyes on but I’ve actually caught a few fish with them. Is there a particular thread y’all use or do you vary it with each fly? I’m not talking color of course but things like mono, waxed, flat, uni-thread, etc…Thanks.
Depends on what u r tying but I pretty much tie with Unithread. 6/0 for saltwater and larger trout flies, 8/0 for the small stuff. I also use clear mono for some of the saltwater patterns if I want to tork it up. Keep at it, you will improve the more you tie. If you are tying trout flies then do yourself a favor and find a copy of AK Best’s Production Fly Tying. It will change your life.good luck
I use flat waxed and Flymaster Plus most of the time. Don’t worry abot your first flie s looking like crap. If you saw some of my first flies you would probably vomit.
uni Big fly builds up and nice head and is very strong. I use alot of uni mono (fine) too. GSP for deer hair.

yeah. stick some of those first ones on a piece of styrofoam and hang it up. it will make you feel mobettah pretty quick, i use mostly gudebrod long spools cause i gotta bunch of it but uni is my favorite. i like the superlines for spinning hair but you can cut through it if you get carried away. i do like the long(wide?) spools so i usually transfer other stuff to them. i get better control cause its spinning inside my hand.
he’s pretty white for a fly guy
