I have noticed the threadfins showing up on the surface. Especially around the riprap. From what I can see this is what the schooling stripers seem to be eating. Has anyone ever used them for bait? I would think since that is what they are feeding on it would make the best bait. Are they difficult to keep alive on a hook? Or is it just not what they sell in the bait shops?
Ya its been my experience they are tough to keep alive.
Even after you just caught them. Some shad saver in the live well does help. but if you can catch them where and when you are fishing then put um back down the stripers will take um

What size mesh does a cast net have to have to catch them. I threw my net with 1/2 mesh right on top of them last year and it seemed to go right through them.
tom i use a 1/4 inch mesh and it works great.it is actually a bait net.i paid about 40$ for it.
So you use threadfin shad too. Do the big ones eat them? Are they a better option than herring this time of year? Are you about ready to start back on the murray, or still having too much fun in the salt?
the bigger ones will eat them.i mainly use them like i would cut baiting.if you put them in a bait tank try not to put to many at one time.i have kept them alive for a couple of hours.they die i use them for chum and catch some more. i will be on murray around the end of this month.i checked a few spots out yesterday evening and it’s looking good so for.i got to get a few trout and reds and then the stripers are the target.i checked the catfish out also they are starting to move back in the area where i caught them last year.
So you are saying the striper are moving in there now. Good to know, I am getting sick of fishing from spence to the towers. I like that part of the lake. I bought littljohns gps. He left his hotspots programed in there. Hopefully they will lead me to fish on your end.
there are a few scattered.if you boughtlittle johns gps then you know some of the spots i fish(■■■■).the ones that are moving are small.the bigguns will be here soon.i got this one flat that they school on.you can see them running back and fourth chasing bait.topwater, bucktails and live bait with 12lb line you can’t beat it.i’m getting excited thinking about it.i just wish the guy would call me about my boat.
Yeah, I hope to get my boat going again this weekend. My neigbor said we can change the coupler without completely pulling the motor. He also said I can rig up the transom to get some more time out of it since it is only wet around the outdrive. Figure no matter what used boat I buy I will have to dump money into it. I ran shakey for a year without problems. Well the starter, but that was because they sold me the wrong one. No big deal.
Yo Sharky…where are you talking about ?..shoot me an e-mail…surly ya’ll ain’t worried about 1 man in a 'yak getting too much of your action:smiley:
