It’s an old yamaha throttle. It is really sticky, to the point where it takes some good force to get it in gear. Can’t let anyone else drive the boat because of the unpredictable acceleration. Wondering if I can grease it up somehow, or if I have to replace the cables, throttle, etc. Thanks.
I’ve been there and done that. Throttle cable aren’t that expensive and well worth it compared to having to fight it along. Gets to be a safety issue. Not worth throwing someone out the boat. You are likly to bust your handle if you keep on anywho. Never had much luck other than soaking whole cable in oil or diesel. If it helps any it won’t last long. You may get a few months extra. I have had some luck cleaning and lubing up a stearing cable but, not the throttle.

is it ur cables or the mechanisms? try a lil gear oil on the pivots of the control box and on the motor. if that doesnt make a big diff i agree change the cables. sticky throttle can make boating a real pain!
what kind of ‘gear oil’ do you recommend?
Change out now while it’s convenient and you have time to order on the net … or change out when it’s not near as convenient and potentially much more expensive …

If your sync & link is way off you could be binding on the acceleration cam.
remove the cables from teh motor, and try it again
that will determine if its motor or not

All I know is… if Chris says it, do it.
same stuff u put in ur lower unit if u have some around. it has a way of creepin that tends to help. the throttle on my mercruiser had gotten aggrevating during docking and such. i did a lil adjusting and lubing and wow what a diff. if it is in the cable however a new cable is the only real fix. aqnything else will be temporary relief i’m afraid. just lettin u know what worked for me.
Ditto on Chris V., thanks again for being there…

Does anyone know what length cables I would need for a '99 sea pro 1700cc? Or how to determine length?
Tried to get in to lubricate the cables with some silcone spray on the advice of a friend. However there is a sheath protecting the cables by the motor, and the cables go way up into the control box. Do I need to completely take out the control box to even lubricate the throttle cables? It is an older yamaha box with quite a bit of corrosion and some stripped screws
.
I am looking for a details ‘how to’ either lubricate or replace these stuck cables. Also, how much would I be looking at to just hire someone to do the job?
Thanks!
PB
cables are not made to be lubricated.
I know an old guy on james island that would tape a plastic bag to the end of a cable, fill the bag with old oil, and hang them from a tree for a week. think of an “IV” drip for for cables
definately not worth the $30 for a new cable

I assume you meant it definitely IS worth the $30 for new cables.
So my other question… do you have to remove the control box to get to where the cables connect in there?
well sorta of, i meant the amount of work required to lube the cables wasnt worth it, when a new cable is less thaN $30, But you got the important part, replace the cable
yes, you must open up the box.
email me a pic of the box
