Was able to get out Thursday and it was a beautiful day. No wind/wasn’t hot…all around great.
I’ve been spoiled the last few times by having bait all over my dock, but this time I had to chase it. Went behind Morris, but it was dead low tide and couldn’t quite get to the bait (which was shallow). Went back behind Sullivan’s island and found a little bait, but in general struggled to find a lot…but after enough time I found enough. Mullet and finger mullet with a few menhaden.
Went out and tried to drift at Grillage with the finger mullet just off the bottom. That didn’t work
Then I went out the tip of the south jetty and fished a few different spots outside the south jetty. Mostly finger mullet on the bottom. Caught a skate and a few BSB. Was starting to get a little discouraged so I switched up my rigs to a double drop rig and fished cut mullet. About 10 minutes after changing to a new spot (about 1/2 way back to dynamite hole on the outside of the south jetty) my rod doubles over. Somehow the fish managed to not only get hooked in the mouth, but got the other hook on the double dropper rig somehow hooked though it’s anal fin, which made for a an interesting fight.
Turned out to be a 40"…maybe 41" inch red fish. My personal best. Very fat fish, big ol’ head…for reference, the fish in my avatar was 37…maybe 38 inches and not nearly as fat
Fished for a bit after that, but felt pretty satisfied and decided to call it a day.
On the way back I saw a couple guys fighting what seemed to be another pretty big fish near the shoal right outside Dynamite hole. I lingered about 100 yards away for a few minutes to see what it was but got impatient and decided to head on.
