Thursday Eve Report

Left the dock at 6:30pm with my first mate and bait from Joe Epting. We have a family tradition of fishing on our birthdays. Could not get out last week, so delayed B-Day trip until tonight.

Marked many fish near center of C2 on a long “finger” point in 50 that drops sharply into channel. Marks appeared on small side so I moved to another point in S side of C2 and found much nicer marks in 60-65 feet.

Set up on those fish for ~1 hour with two pull downs and spit hooks.

By now sun is below clouds on horizon so I moved back to first point, fish were still there so I gave them a try. Shortly after spot locking in 50 feet and thumping - a school of NICE hooks moves through between 40 & 50 - had three of five rods go off at once.

First was a herring sandwich one crank off the bottom - 24 inch fish. Second in the fire drill was a live DR herring in 45 feet that got around the trolling motor and broke leader. Need to respool that rod as the line is ragged for 30+ feet.

Third fish was a herring sandwich on a spinning rod rigged for free line. I like to cast it out, set in rod holder and let it drift to bottom. That fish was 25 inches.

While landing the 25 inch fish, rod 4 - another live bait in 45 feet goes screaming. Fish broke hook after I picked up the rod.

After getting gear back in order and re-baited, more fish move through well after dark but no more bites. Cleaned up and back at the dock at 9:00 with two nice fish.

Felt GREAT to be back out after 3+ weeks and celebrate with a belated Birthday fishing trip

Donnie spoke well during his MSC presentation Tuesday night - we are truly blessed to be able to enjoy this resource and beautiful lake. Remember those we lost on 9/11 and in the wars after.

Nice, detailed report. Thanks dano. Bet you would have liked to bring in that hook-breaker!

Thanks for the report. I stopped by the ramp on the way home about 7:30 and you sure picked a perfect evening to get out there.

You are welcome guys! Yeah - a beautiful night to be out. The forecast looked “iffy” for weekend so I busted a move to get out last night.

I have now broken three hooks this summer - might be a bad batch from Eagle Claw - but it felt like a good fish while I had it on.

The one that wrapped me in the TR pulled the rod tip a good foot under water on the bite and was screaming drag the whole time. I figure the leader got in its’ gill plate and cut it clean.

If the weather is OK - I’ll try for a “do-over” this weekend :sunglasses:

That is odd, I used to use eagle claws and they never broke. Had a few bend but never break. You might want to get a new batch of hooks.
