Thursday Night 8/16

Met the Pattianne’s at the dock about 7:30 and started heading up the lake. Marked some fish at the first place we checked, so we dropped our lines down on a hump in 65’. Caught 5 before dark and then moved on to see if we could catch some bigger fish.

Decided to just head over and join the flotilla around the towers and picked up a few more before calling it quits at 11:00. Didn’t see anyone really doing much over there.

Wound up with 8 small fish.

Great time and great company. Learned a bunch more, especially in some tweaking I need to do on my fishfinder to take advantage of the features it provides. I guess the big ones were saving themselves for another day. Also noticed the definite difference between white rods and our black ones at night.

I read the striper forum, but this is my first post. I’ve been striper fishing for only about a year and a half, but I fish with one of the seasoned veterans on the board here. I learned quickly that for night fishing having a black rod is not the best idea. I spray painted the last 2-3 feet of my striper rods white. It makes a big difference being able to see the light bites at night.

We use glow sticks and tape them to the end of the rod.

Steeverino, that’s what we call short fish on my boat. I fish with this amateur named Steve that can only land short fish so we started calling them Steverino’s. He really sucks, but he has a nice boat ramp

They are all keepers now!

Yea tom hope he never joins this site. Wouldnt want him spreading the small fish luck to people…lol…

Side note if anyone is interested in some glowstick fishing rods let me know. I have 4 8’ berkley glowsticks. These are the light action not the heavy catfish kind. They are awesome for pulling freelines and downrods, thats about it. Planer boards put to much bend in them and can only use 1.5oz max on downrods. They light up pretty good at night. 100$ for all 4

Striperskiff suggested that we didn’t mention the bells we use on our rods.

Funny how he decided to make his first post on my report of 8 small fish.

That was only because i didn’t want a run on bells before I was able to buy me some.

All kidding aside, I am going to pick up a few…this time of year you can’t always depend on the clicker going off before they tangle a couple of lines

I have fished beside some people who have had bells and most of yall know who i am talking about.…i just dont know how people use them. They would just be way to annoying for me… Just my opinion…but i also usally freespool my reels with the clickers turned on.

But tonight will be a different story. Gonna try striperskiffs hooks out, so i dont think they would work as good in freespool. So tonight reels will be engaged.

I bought a 16’ long LED tape and mounted it just above my rub rail. Just trying it out on one side to see how it works. If it’s bright I’ll probably run them around the entire boat. Only $13 shipped on ebay.

Yeah, Steeverino sure loves the short fish. Wont put a line down below 30’, says the big fish pull too hard

That hurts, Tom. You know I don’t know how deep I’m dropping.

Sorry, I’ll bring you a box of tissues tonight. But how about you man up and start putting your own bait on. Herring are not icky.

Man this turning into offshore discussion…better come with thick skin

I noticed something with the fish we caught last night. The ones we caught off the bottom in 65-70’ were fiesty as can be and put up a great fight for their size. We caught the ones suspended in the deep water at the same depth, but yet they were very lethargic and didn’t put up much a fight at all.

The ones we caught just off the bottom appeared to be much healthier fish. I wonder if even at the same depth, the oxygen content is different just off the bottom than it is at the exact same depth, but in much deeper water??

I’ve noticed the same thing with bait staying alive. Even spots that are not that far away. So I’m guessing the oxygen probably does vary. Maybe the water that is against the dirt holds temperature better.
