Thursday Scouting for New Bottom

Yesterday my buddy could not go but I did not want to pass up the forecast, so I went solo. And I was determined to scout for new places out to 120’, ie. not to fish anywhere I was familiar with already. So I cruised the live bottom areas, stared at the Simrad, dropped down when I saw fish, but never deployed the anchor.

I drifted some, held in place with the big motor some, and by mid afternoon could use the trolling motor. The whole point was, when I caught better fish, I made notes but kept moving. So I gathered notes on both where fish were and where they were not.

As usual, caught a lot of sharks, small to medium bsb’s, one trigger, one King, and a number of various snappers, including one nice red. Actually the big red came up with another decent red on the second hook, but I stuck with the game plan and kept moving…even though the graph was lit up. And it was a text book place, steep 10’ drop off in live bottom area. “I shall return…”

Additional research was continually alternating between squid and jigs, which remains inconclusive for now. So I might have caught more fishing differently, but it is good to find new places. And I’ve always been more of a troller, so the bottom is kind of new to me.

We went out yesterday as well… mostly Vermillion… I must say it laid down nicely yesterday, but the morning was a little “wetter” than I had anticipated… all in all a great cold day.

That work will pay off in the long run!

A buddy of mine always says “mark bottom not fish”. That’s a pro tip right there if I’ve ever heard one
