Tibor Everglades

Thinking of buying one. Suggestions on old model or QC, color and what 8wt line to put on it.

Go with the QC…it costs a little more but the drag stays properly lubed longer and protects it more from salt. And, it obviously is easier to change spools. Best advice, don’t dunk a Tibor when you go wading. What rod are you gonna put it with?

Or for half the price you could get a nautilus #8 and not have to ever worry about it…nothing against tibor, just think its pointless to spend that much on a reel that you have to worry about getting wet or salty

Nautilus all the way! Check out the Nautilus N/V too. I’ve dunked mine hundreds of times while wading- no problem with the drag system (CCF or N/V). They use cork and carbon fiber so you basically get the best of both worlds…and they’re sealed, I mean completely sealed. Best reels available in the “upper-price range” in my opinion.

The CCF #8 is my primary reel. Abbapoola, I think I sold you yours…But, I understand the attraction of a Tibor, they are still some of the best reels out there. Abel and Tibor have helped break more world records than any other companies. Some people don’t mind spending extra $ to get what they want. Let me adjust what I said,If you wade with your Tibor, make sure you take care to open it up and rinse it when you get done and all will be well.

I have sat at my computor trying to figure out just how to answer this question. My Tibor is BY FAR my favorite reel. When I want a reel step up…this is it period. My first Red, tailer, tarpon, a 6’ black tip shark, Shad, Amberjack, dolphin, trigger on a flat, bonefish, Cuda, lil tuna and many others have all sucumbed to the Tibor.

That said, I LOVE my nautilus for wading and 99.99% of the time I use it.

Still, I love the classics, the same reason you will not catch me ridding anything other bike than a carbed Harley, is the same reason I break out the Tibor now and again. Old School Performance and feel just plain kicks ass. Also, those in the know can attest that NO ONE will out perform my Harley, new or old challanger. Same goes for my Tibor, just requires more work than some others.

The below Pic was the first with my girl and ■■■■ I love her.

I wanted a tibor but ended up with a Nautilus CCF #8, and I am glad I have this one. It is bullet proof and there is little need to maintain, just back off the drag and rinse and it is ready for another day. The CCF drag will stop a truck!
I also have a loop, but in a 6wt, and the drag on it is completely sealed and smooooothhh.
Good luck with your choice.

Far better it is to dare mighty things to win glorious triumphs even though checkered with failure, than to take ranks with those poor spirits who never enjoy much nor suffer much because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.

If you’re looking at Tibor’s you might also want to look at Hatch reels.

“all this for a fish”

No doubt about it- the Tibor is a bad dude. You’ll never need to buy another, and I really don’t think there’s a better fly reel out there. For what we do on the Carolina coast, you sure don’t have to have this much reel, but if you want it, and have the “cashola”, go ahead and get one. I have never heard anyone say “gee, I wish I hadn’t bought my Tibor”…

Thanks for all the input. I did a little surfing on the tibor and the nautilus and I think the sealed drag on the nautilus might win out. So the next question is what line? SA, Rio, Courtland? I have a spare spool for the reel I have now loaded with SA Mastery Series Redfish that has never been wet. The line is thrown in with the reel so I guess I should get it loaded.

The rod is a Winston XTR 8wt 9’.

I like the Rio Redfish line, but that’s just a personal preference. It’s easy to cast long distances, but it’s bigger head also helps load the rod easier for short casts.

Though I think you already have your mind made up, I’ll also give a nod to the Nautilus.

I just got a 10 wt. reel and was presented with the choice of a Nautilus CCF #10 or an Abel Super 10, both at just about the same price. Went with the Nautilus because of the sealed drag/little maintenance aspect. Not that I mistreat my equipment, but I just don’t think I’d be able to enjoy a reel that I was constantly worried about messing up.

Tibors are bombproof!! have some that are 10yrs old, get fished regularly and hard, as good as new!! Nautilus’s are fantastic, but havent been around long enough to truly withstand the test of time. do appreciate sealed drag and light weight though… a good problem to have; deciding between the 2!

I have my eye on the Tibor Backcountry Light. Looks badass behind glass, but I have never actually held one. Has anyone tried these?
