Tide Question Please

I have been using the WWW TIDE AND PREDICTOR site for tide information.

Today it showed low tide at “Oaks Creek Upper End” at 1:55 pm. (I assume the upper end is the end almost to the Huntington Beach causeway.)

Well, I got there at 11:00 wanting to fish the falling tide but it was already low tide…???

Would any of you care to share the tide sites that you use?

Thanks,

Homey

I use Pro Tides on the machine at home, and Mobile Geographics on my cell. They differ from 5-6 minutes on their predictions, which I can live with. But I don’t know how accurate either really is. For instance, OC .5 miles above entrance, the one I work off of on that end, the sandbar on the turn before you get back to Brigham’s Hole, low is always right around 30 minutes earlier than stated. It’s not that freaking far, that it should be 30 minutes off (my ignorant self doesn’t think so anyway), but it is consistently that way. Messed me up at first too.

I suggest you pick a site, go back to where you went today while the water is going out and compare the predicted time with the actual time, when it turns. Do that a couple of days and I think you’ll have a good idea as to what is really going on. Adjust accordingly.

George, how can you be so precice at 2:30 AM? I have tried to rationalize the difference between the tide stage at the stated location vs. a spot relatively close to the location. I have come to the conclusion that the creek fills from the back, thus the tides are higher earlier farther from the ocean. My thoughts are based on Murrells Inlet only, since it is essentially a closed vessel.

Hmm, Wally, only because I didn’t drink a lot last evening, I guess. If I was in fact, even close to making sense in the first place  I think you’re probably right in your estimation of the tides back in the creek

Oddly enough, the high tide numbers seem to be closer to accurate than the lows, IME. I can’t figure why that is, and gave up trying. If in fact it’s even true.

My prediction said 1:20 low but I did notice it stopped moving at 12:30

My prediction is tomorrow is going to be a better day of fishing than today…no matter what tide…??:stuck_out_tongue:

I’m thinking some people caught fish this week but it wasn’t me, the couple of times I went sucked. Excluding Sunday afternoon. But Mon/Tues AM sucked hard. Caught a bunch of trash fish and a couple of spottails and a trout, which was cool but I was targeting flounder and got shutout there. So I hope you’re right Doc, and get on them.

Use the SC DNR tide charts website click on the link for more tides at the top of the page and find where you are located. It has been accurate for me

Know that all of these tide tables are predictions. Actual tides are also much dependent on the wind direction and strength.

The wind is the main reason you see differences in your table and what actually happens.

Seems like they’re all pretty close to each other, like a minute apart in a couple of cases.

Thanks for all of the ■■■■■■■■.

If I use the “Oaks Creek Upper End” location, would the north side of the Huntington Causway be the best place to try to get a comparison between the chart and the actual?

Thanks agin,

Google Earth and the numbers say the location is in the last oyster flat by the causeway. That is WTF back in there and you likely won’t be able to access it at low. I’m not sure I can even in my yak most days. High, depending on your boat and the tide, maybe. Those oyster mounds are pretty high back there and don’t get covered up by much water, on most tides.
