Headed out with two friends into a beautiful ocean. One guy started feeling sick about 15 miles off the rocks. I told him it was the calmest day ever recorded in history and he would be fine. 15 minutes later he asked for a bucket and toilet paper. Once he dropped the mother load, he was good to go all day. Keep an eye out on www.ratemyterd.com. It was a good one.
Picked at the dolphin all morning. About 11:30 we had a tripple and landed all three. As we were celebrating, the forth rod went down. Landed that one. As we were cooling off with buckets of water, we realized the fifth line was wrapped around the prop. Spent 30 minutes cutting line out of the prop. Once it was cleared I realized the seal had been shrededed and it was time to head to the hill. Thanks to the two other captains giving me advice as I made the decision on whether or not to run the engine without a seal.
Hated to leave the fish biting, but it was the best decision. Thanks to Sea Tow for keeping track of us as we came in. Always nice to be able to here them respond when you are 50 miles out.
Fished in 200’, 85 degree water. Hot colors were pink and white. Ended the half day with 10 dolphins, (7 gaffers(20lb range), 3 slingers.
Best part of the day was hand lining the slinger off of the teaser. Later in the day a daymaker dolphin took that teaser. We saw him jump about 3 times with pink squid following behind him.
Glad to hear you made it back in. I was one of the boats talking to you when you were contemplating running in on your own power or not. Hopefully your engine is not too bad off.
The decision making process was: Did we hear grinding, No. Was it spinning smoothly, yes. Was there a chance of getting water into the lower unit, yes.
We decided to run it back to the hill instead of wasting Sea Tow’s time to come get us. We flushed the engine and lower unit extensively.
Engine ran fine on teh way in and is heading to the shop tomorrow.
We washed the bucket out about a hudred times, but the jokes were plentiful.
