Had a great day on the water. WOT out and in. Trolled until about noon and then did some bottom bumping. While reeling in the 3rd reef donkey, a school of about 50 mahi swarmed under the boat. We threw everything we had at them, but could only manage three slingers on cut squid. They hung around for about 20 minutes until an 8’ shark ran then away. Anyone have a sure fire lure that works for schooling mahi? Ended the day with 9 dolphin and the typical bottom dwellers. Hope to be back at it again this weekend.
If you can catch one splash it around behind the boat make it jump and such.Keep your eyes out for bigger ones on the edges throw to him. If you don’t have one on throw a big surface popper and rip it thru the water. Splashing gets the dolphin excited the more excited the less picky they are on the bait you throw in there.
sometimes they just won’t bite but this has worked for me. Another trick if they won’t take is mark the spot pull away put out a trolling spread and troll around the area. Sometimes they will hit the trolled baits when they won’t hit floating cut bait. If they were on something or they were oriented on something they won’t go far.
Sounds like you had a good day anyway
