Tight Lines 5/31

Left shem creek at 4:00 and cleared the rocks to find a very rough ocean. After 3 hours of getting beat up,we decided to put lines in at 130 ft.10 min. in ,a king missed me and about 20 min after that, had a double dolphin. Not long after another double.Thought we were going to be rewarded for taking all the abuse we were handed this morning but not to be.Nothing for a couple hours so we pressed on to 160 ft and I saw a sail chasing my short outrigger, dropped it back and it was gone. Not long after had another sail bite and no hookup.A little while later another sail and finaly hooked up but for only a few minutes and the hooked pulled. What am I doing wrong with these bill fish? Never caught one and had 3 chances today. Any advice would be appreciated.

j-hooks razor sharp?
hitting them with a file each time you put a new ballyhoo on?
that might help.

could just be bad luck, you’ll get one soon enough.
also, try a circle hook if you feel like you are comfortable with the drop-back. once they are hooked, rarely do they pull off.

what kind of boat were you in reel excitement?

25 foot Pro-Line walk around with single 225 Johnson.

If you can rig those ballyhoo with circle hooks, you will have a better hook up ratio on the bills. Unfortunately, you may lose some toothy critters with half cut baits.

don’t drop back unless they have it. The ole charleston drop back (to nothing). Don’t bother with circles until you’re consistent on J hooks. Keep trying, it will all come together for you.

swamp is right if you drop it bak you better hope there is another behind him if not the bait passes the fish before he knows what to do…get a spinning rod if you want to hook up more often

most people confuse drop back with feeding the fish a bait. I’ve missed more than my share. Nothing will make you look better than a suicidal fish.
