Sent out a couple texts Tuesday afternoon asking a few people to go on an afternoon trip Wednesday.
Got responses of, “You know there’s a SCA?” and even screenshots of the buoy blowing about 20kts NE and 9ft waves.
I replied, “I’m not fishing there,” as a couple other people responded they were ready to roll.
Took the first two guys and told a few others they’d have to wait for next time.
Everything went almost exactly to plan. I knew I couldn’t go far because of the weather. Still a gamble on whether the grouper would be shallow yet or not.
My cousin got to my house and we loaded up the boat, fueled and iced up, got some chicken and then got the boat into the water around 12.
Sshaarda showed up, and we rolled to the secret bait spot in the harbor. Tide was wrong, but we picked at the bait for about an hour and a half and then headed out the jetties.
Ride was okay after we got past some pretty big swells that were getting steep in the shallow water. Ride went well for about 8 miles until the waves got steep again. Got some spray over the bow, and my hate for getting wet by spray made me stop and think about plans B and C.
Tried plan B for about 1/4mi but couldn’t make more than 16kts. Seas were standing us up.
Went to plan C and could do 20kts comfortably and only had 3 miles to go.
Got to the plan C area, but no fish there. Dropped once under power, and no bites. Nothing on the sonar either. Water too warm still…
Pushed at 16kts to plan B area for a few more miles, and finally got there. Saw two loggerheads mating. If they didn’t care about the sloppy ocean why should we?
Sshaarda was wondering if we could anchor, and I said, “Anchoring’s easy in this… your anchor course is pretty obvious.” ![]()
Looked around for a while and found where the fish were. Set the hook, but we were off the spot. Everything’s harder when the ocean’s big.
Tried a reset, but the anchor slipped back and put us over a less fishy looking part. Decided to fish it for a second and caug
