Tigress 12/8/10 - Grouper and C bass

Rolled out yesterday about 1:30PM to try and get on a couple gag grouper. Ride out was nice with only about 5kt wind on our backs. Set up on one spot and picked at a couple 13 or 14 inch c bass, so I moved a few hundred feet. Picked at some slightly bigger ones there, but about the 4th drop got a good gag bite and I got him in the boat. C bass weren’t biting too hard at that spot and no more gag bites, so I moved about 2 miles or so. Looked around some spots I fished a few years ago and found some new stuff. Set right up on a nice ridge, and we started catching better knothead c bass then. No throwbacks. I like it when they’re nice sized like that and don’t need measuring. Measuring size c bass don’t give you much of a fillet anyway… Tried a new bait where I saw big fish on the sonar and got nailed as soon as I got the bait where I wanted. Held him for a second and the leader broke. I think it was a nice grouper because of much power it had rather than a headshake like a snapper. Wish I could have gotten that one. Sat there a little more hoping we’d get another chance, but c bass were the only thing going. Moved a few hundred feet again before the sun got down and the fish started going off- gags and c bass both. Limited out, and threw some back. Gags fought hard in the 58 degree water all the way to the bote. The knotheads were still biting when it got dark and we were just keeping what was over 16 inches at that point. The wind that had started gusting about 15 or 20, but I put it on 3500 RPM’s with it tabbed down and rolled in without any spray. Better believe we had a couple layers of clothes on though buddy!

Pretty fish, but you look COLD!!! Scoutin 4 Goodies sent me a text the other day and our conversation went something like this:

S4G: Want to fish on friday? Looks nice!
Me: Hmmmm… I might can work that out!
S4G: Low 36, High 56
Me: Well in that case, hell no!

Nice. How deep did you have to go?

Phin, is made out of something different than I am. 30 hour sword trips and below freezing bottom drops. But when he goes he seems to produce. He does venture on the other side of what I consider “Fun”.

Good catch!

nice catch Phin, no need to go far this time of year for gags, water temp said you were in site of the bribge which could be out to 65/70’, (water temp was 67 in 100’ last week)lots of good fish at thease depths this time of year if you can sneek out during the week. looks like the weather this weekend will keep me in the woods but I would like to make one more grouper trip this year. I tore my rotator cuff in my right shoulder trying to catch a deer dog the week before thanksgiving then really messed it up fighting a 40lb cobia in 100’ of water the next week, not very bright ! trying to hold off surgery untill the 3rd of Jan.so I can do a little fishing and hunting during the holidays, hope to recover in time to hit the tuna in La the middle of march. If we don’t get out again wish yall a great christmass!

If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.

Nice fish Phin. Glad you made it out in your reconstructed ride. Still waiting for another chance to ride in the Mako.

1:30pm push off and a limit of quality fish. Doesn’t get any better. Guess you cleaned fish the next day. I think the’re easier to clean anyway when they “harden up” overnight.

If you’re not a liberal at twenty you have no heart, if you’re not a conservative at forty you have no brain.

Here’s why I don’t care if it is 30 degrees.

20 gallons of fuel.
0 dollars of bait.
20lb of ice.
2hrs of non stop fish catching.
And last but not least,
Less than 3 weeks before no grouper or snapper allowed!

Good going Phin. That’s some good work with a short time. Big gag! Should have a day off the week of Christmas if anyone finds a weather break and decides to go. Would love to join.
