Listen, I tried to do this trip in a way that would please the folks here who frown upon people doing first time type things the wrong way but successfully nonetheless.
I knew I had screwed up as soon as we’d forgotten the swordfish flags to fly as we came back into the creek though.
I let the shimano butterfly jigs soak in lightstick chemical for like a rave effect. I cut the barb off the circle hook and used a really short tether for them too.
I still used avet 50/2’s though…

Nice PHIN great story and trip.
I tried it once and didn’t catch nothin…
gonna have to give it another try. Looks like you picked a perfect
night. Those are great eating size and you probably don’t have to rebuild your drags either. Did the shark actually crush the light or just carry it around for awhile they can be pesky you shoulda dropped him something with a hook in it so as to bring him up for a closer look.
I hear they are bigger at night.
Thanks for sharing your story and pics

Bait was set at 100ft. Popped out, and as I wound up tight, the shark was just under the surface moving from my left to right where I could see the light trailing behind the shark. I had the light cliped on above the swivel, and that leader was two of my arm spans long… It was a bigger shark than I wanted to fight on stand up tackle at that point in the night… much bigger than the sort of normal 6 or 7ft nurse shark we hooked while bottom dropping right after it got dark.
When I came tight on the shark, the line cut right through. The light was sitting there kind of neutral in the water before I reeled it in, and the shark appeared like it deliberately came right back to it and swallowed it. No more light seen… The shark then hung around about 75ft behind the boat for a while after that, so we figured he was not going to let us land any fish at that point!
Probably not his first time hanging out around a boat that was swordfishing.
Thats cool
I didn’t realize the shark had actually taken your bait. But coming back and eaten expensive lights man thats unkind Your right he would have most likely eaten anything else you thru in there or attempted to bring in.
Your success story has me all fired up to give it another try.
a sword is still on the bucket list.

A lot of commerical boats caught swords sunday night. There was some huge thermoclines on the offshore side of the stream.
It is defenitely that time of the year and moon for swordfish.
Maybe try a mullet bait hooked through the belly and then in the eye to cut down on the time rigging baits. Also try it dropping down around sunset near shore deep water (between the stream and the ledge).
But defenitely have a buddy boat near by, and REPORT your catch. I have noticed NOAA has only reported 400 lbs of Rec Swordfish catch this year.
