Left the creek a little after 2PM Sunday with Purpose One, myself, and a boat loaded down with gear for an overnighter in the gulf stream. Sea breeze had it a little chopped up nearshore, but it went to just swells once we got away from land. About 30 miles off it became more like this.
Then like this about 40 miles off.
And like this by sundown.
My cousin left Beaufort a little after we left Charleston. and he was to meet us at a spot near the 30 fathom break. He got there a little after dark. We would buddy boat all night for safety. We’d spent lots of time discussing and prepping for this trip and waiting on the weather to do it. I even made my own under water light with green LED’s.
We tried some deep dropping after it got dark, but they wouldn’t bite. Found some really nice spots for some other time before they shut 240ft seaward down maybe.
Got out to where we wanted to drift for the swords and rigged up the baits and set them out. Wasn’t but maybe an hour before Rick and I had one hooked up. It popped out the clip and came up to the top splashing. We could see the electralume I picked up from Atlantic Game and Tackle trailing behind this awesome fish thru our light as Rick wound up tight, and then the fight was on. What a cool fish. This was one of the coolest things I’ve ever done for sure.
We flossed up another bait after getting the fish taken care of, and sent both baits back down and clipped them off one at the transom and one at the bow to be spread apart. Laid down in the bow and watched the stars for a little bit before we heard my cousins on the radio with one hooked up. We stood by until we hea
Great post man I wish we wouldnt have had electronic problems!! We was going to try an overnight as well, this hurts really bad man sometimes things just dont go your way!! Congrats on the trip great looking fish!! How deep was the swords if you dont mind me asking. Never done that before I bet that was very fun!!! Congrats once again!!!
Mako earns her keep all the time. Very happy with it!
Depth?
We went pretty far offshore…
I cut the sounder off at 1200ft to save power. Cut it on to look for thermoclines a few times only.
They bit at different depths. I don’t think there’s much difference between fishing a bait at 100ft or 200ft. I think it’s more of a bigger picture thing when you’re talking about fish that are 1500-3000ft down all day and then come up to feed at night.
I feel like the activity will be at 200-400 sometimes and at <200 other times for example. Depends on the moon I think and also what’s going on with currents and undercurrents.
I have a pic of the full haul from this trip that looks like the ones from when Rick and I first started fishing together. Don’t think the forum can handle pics like that anymore. Purpose One can still whoop up on some grouper though- be assured.
