Tigress 4/17/11 - tuna report

Left the house once Circle Hook and I got done squaring away first trolling trip of the year rigging and supplies. Pulled up to the gas station to fill up with corn and dino-derived octane. $3.59999999999999999 a gallon.

Went by Haddrells west ashley to get a box of squid as we waited for the wind at the buoy to die down some more. Kid in Haddrells stared out at Tigress and inquired how far we were going in concern/disbelief: “Are those 50 wides on there? Or 30’s???” Maybe the disbelief was apparent in my own eyes. With all the wahoos and tunas caught last week, I was adequately inspired to do a dedicated tuna trip. This was a new challenge for me and the boat. No tuna have ever been caught on Tigress before- especially not in the afternoon. On top of that, the visible grouper and snapper equipment on the boat was abnormally sparse. There was either going to be something really wrong with this trip or something really right. There were a couple jigging reels and a bunch of trolling reels. It was like catching grouper and snapper is illegal or something.

We finally slipped her into the creek, and then we picked our way thru the strategically located sailboat blockades.

Was able to make about 25 knots, and we came upon stuff busting the water in 120ft. Went over to check it out, and we found flipper playing. They were wallowing and flirting between the aerial displays.

Then we checked one another out.

Went on a little further and set our trap for the tuna. Halfway setting the trap, a blackfin got caught.

Were you fishing GTH? If so I was on the other boat out there. We ended up with 1 skipjack (caught five minutes after lines hit the water), and two bonitas (when sun hit the water). Lost a 20 lb blackfin at the boat.

Thanks again for the trip Phin!

Forgot to thank scootin for the tips also. Maybe one day he will come on the boat and show me how to catch double digits tuna.

Wes, the boat looks sick man!!! Nice job on the tuna!

your putting that Alcohol crap in your tank?.?.?. Trust me… It’s worth the extra cost to fill up w Non E gas. That crap killed my last boats engines(and my wallet fixing them).

Again, Good job on the fish! Looking forward to seeing the Tigress out there trolling this year.

Oh, and the new Avet Raptor is sick… Straightened out a couple of 150lb swivels with it. Great reel. I already want another one…

I have been using ethanol blended fuel for about 2 years in the HPDI. I run Yamaha Ring Free and now the new Ring Free “Plus” with the ethanol additive in it, and full synthetic or synthetic blend TCW3.
Have not had any issues with vapor separator clogging, etc. I have to replace the “Yama-Guchi” (expensive) medium pressure in-line fuel filter that’s between the vapor separator and injector pump once a year like clockwork OR ELSE I lose top end power from fuel restriction. I started running a 2 micron racor filter before the engine recently to see if that helps cut down on the frequency of replacing the 90 dollar yamaguchi filter under the cowling…

As you can see from my report, I also don’t let the ethanol fuel sit in the boat while not being used. This is the opposite of old school gasoline advice because of the whole phase separation thing.

That may be more than you wanted to know, but that’s what I’ve been doing so far.

I will admit… after my fuel problems in the old rig I’m a little too paranoid now… Sounds like you’ve got a good plan.

With grouper and snapper becoming overpopulated as we speak, bottom fishing will definately be easier in the near future.

I believe we will start getting C bass in the cast net during shrimp baiting season at the rate we’re going…

Excellent small boat report. What was the total mileage and how many gallons did you burn?

It ain’t no mystery…this beer’s history!

C bass are already coughing up baby endangered red snapper this year. Guys from Florida come up here and complain about not being able to catch snapper and grouper because of all the c bass!

Have not refilled yet, but it should be under 70 gallons of fuel and 1.5 gallons of oil for 170ish total miles. The most the boat has ever burned was 79 gallons on a two-day sword/grouper trip. Definately an “economical” ride as far as something that can fish in the ocean!

Good to know. I have a similar fuel burn with my setup…not that I plan to take my 21 out there or anything like that.:smiley:
