Tilt and trim has a mind of its own

Have a 2000 90hp 2 stroke yamaha. This weekend the motor decided it would trim itself up while running wide open down the Wando. Has anybody out here had this happen to them before?

Maybe… possibly… a bad switch?

Something is feeding power to the t/t motor. Could be a switch failing closed and telling the relay to close. Or, could be a relay failing closed.

I am no mechanic by any means, but i would check the battery terminals to see if they are corroded. That can cause all kinds of strange things to happen.

That had to be sketchy when it first did it.

Check to make sure no water is getting into your switch, that’s what happened to mine, did the same thing.

Few years ago I had a motor trim up on its own but it was in the barn while I was working on something on the trailer. Quite startling. It was right after driving back from a trip in a blinding thunderstorm so pretty sure it was from water in the remote switch. After things dried out it never did it again. If yours didn’t get wet I would assume a short of some sort in the switch or connections.

I plan on living forever, so far so good

Contacts in relay were a bit corroded and there was a little moisture in there. Cleaned them off and shined them up. We will see how it goes next time in the water! Thanks for all the suggestions!

Had the same thing happen, yamaha 150 2 stroke, would be sitiing at the dock or beach and it would just trim on its own, it was the switch in the remote control, you can take it off and clean it up with electronic cleaner and then coat it with good marine based silicon, or just replace, good luck
