1996 Johnson 88 SPL–Trim motor is shot. I can lift the motor up and down using the manual release screw on the starboard side. The trim rams are out. How do you manually retract them? Many thanks.
That’s what I was afraid of. I may try to remove the old motor and run them down with a drill and some type of driver. Thank again.
If you remove the old motor and the rest of the unit is serviceable, replace the motor. It is just 3 bolts. I did my 1995 88 spl a few years back with an ARCO third party replacement. It is still working well and shows no corrosion.
I keep thinking I’d like to replace the old 88, but, she won’t give me a reason.

Seals need replacing too. That’s why the TT motor is shot. I can get a whole unit for several hundred bucks. That 88spl is a tough motor–can’t find a reason to replace mine either.
