Tilt/Trim Help

I noticed some rust on the body of the stator assembly on my tilt/trim the other day. I would like to take it off, sand it, prime it and put a new coat of paint on it. How hard is it to get this off and back on again without any problems? I am pretty mechanical but have never messed with the tilt/trim and don’t want to screw something up that is working. Any tricks or pitfalls associated with this task? This is a 2003, 70 hp Yamaha.

Thanks

Come on, no words of wisdom from anyone?

I replaced mine due to the same issue you are having(03 60 yamaha 2 stroke). Real easy till you get to the back bolt then a pain in the a#$$#.I ended up loosening the bolts that hold the motor to the transom almost all the way which gave me barely enough room to get to the back corner bolt.Took about an hour to replace.

Did you actually replace the housing itself or just repaint it? Thanks for your response.

i’d like to replace mine as well. it is the only thing on the motor with corrosion, and it drives me nuts. mines a yamaha 90hp 2-stroke.

I’d very much like to hear the best way to replace or paint it.

I just replaced mine with a unit from Arco. Trust me, you can POR 15 that thing all you want, but salt just keeps eating away at it once it starts.
As BillyMac stated, the back bolt is a nightmare. Mine was butted up to my Jackplate, so I had to take my engine hoist/cherry picker and pull the engine away from it. Super easy after I did that.

Mine rusted all the way through from the top(where yours is beginning to rust).I replaced the whole unit and replaced the fluid. No problems since.Never could figure out why it was the only thing on my motor to rust like that, all my zincs are good.

By the way,on that back bolt I used a hex bolt the same size and thread. It was much easier using a socket with an extension to reach back there.Hope this helps.

DF,
I didn’t see your picture the first time I pulled up your post. You’ve still got a couple of years left on that one. Mine started looking like that about 3 years ago. Finally got to where I could punch a hole through the metal this year so I replaced it.

I may just clean it and spray something on it and wait for it to corrode. Probably wont get to it before winter anyway. Thanks for all the input.
