Tilt/Trim Issue

Have a 1999 mercury 60 that seems to be having a tilt down issue. It has 3 separate up/down switches and it does it at all 3, so I’m thinking it isn’t a switch problem. Basically, it will go up anytime you hit a switch, but will not go down unless you hit up then down real quick a few times. Once it starts going down you can let off the switch and it keeps working until you let it sit for a few seconds and then nothing until you do the up/down trick. I am thinking the tilt uses the same solenoid as the starter? Could it be going bad?

that should have two solenoids. one for up, one for down. if you hit the down multiple times rapidly, does it then try to go down? if so, it sounds like its a sticky solenoid. if not, it sounds like there may be a limit switch that is going bad.

Could be the brush in the tilt motor getting stuck.

not likely a brush if the trim up works fine 100% of the time

switch the up relay with the down relay. if the problem then starts to replicate itself when going up, then you have your answer. if that doesnt work, find your limit switch, disconnect it and then try it

Thanks for the responses, had the boat up for sale, it sold today as is. The new owner also thought it was the down relay. He will troubleshoot it.

good deal, and it sounds like the new owner was on the right track

That sounds like the “up” solenoid is bad. It has a contact in the up solenoid that is normally closed that will not let the down work while the up is energized and vice versa. they are all like that so you can’t push an up button and a down button at the same time.
