A question for the flyfishing people…….A friend of mine from the north wants to visit and try his luck at flyfishing for reds. He’s experienced at flyfishing but has never tried for reds. I’ve never flyfished! He would like to know what time of year is best so he could plan his trip accordingly. Anyone have any suggestions on when he should visit?
Thanks!!
Getting to the right location at the right tide is the key. You have to first know where the fish are going to be. The low tide fish are in good numbers right now because of water temperature, but will be scattered in the summer. When the water temp gets too cold, the bite can turn off completely. The heat of the summer is when the tailing on the marsh flats (high tide fishing) gets really aggressive as the fish go after fiddlers on the flats. To me, marsh fishing is more fun, but different people have different likes. The only hard months for me to fly fish for reds is Jan-Mar. Even then, I can find fish if I want, I just have to work a lot harder at it and the weather makes it not as fun. Aug-Oct the high tide tailing action is typically really hot.
Go back and look at the inshore reports/flyfishing reports late July through November and you’ll pick up tons and tons of ideas/tips/locations/knowledge.
