Is it customary to tip a Captain from one of the Tow Boat Services?
dunno…but, I would.

Interesting question, no opinion but am interested in hearing others. Do you tip
a tow truck driver who tows your car?

everyone nowadays expects a tip and i’m sorry, you have to earn it, and as much as it cost to get towed in…sorry 15% of alot is still alot!
It’s not that much if you have a membership with a tow service.

Now you’ve got me thinking… I’m interested in this as well.
I’ve used Sea Tow twice (card totin’ member), and never thought about tipping to tell the truth.
Mike/Steve,
What are your thoughts/experiences on this?
Happy boatin’ y’all!!
You tip someone for bringing you food/drinks, why wouldn’t you tip someone that puts your disabled boat on the dock without a hitch. You all spend countless hours talking about your boat on here and taking care of it like its your most prized possesion, only makes sense to me. I certainly would if the Capt treated my disabled boat as his own. In my mind if you earn it, why not. He’s working hard on your behalf.
If you come back and say “why wouldn’t you tip your …” well why not tip them if they go over and above for you.
On the flip side, if they don’t earn one then they certainly don’t deserve one.
Just my $.02.
Next time you guys have your boat worked on, slip in the back and give the mechanic a couple of twentys.
Never thought about it, but - you tip a waitress because that is the money she is living off of - she’s amking less than $3/hr otherwise… this would be more like tipping the restaurant owner in comparison. I don’t think it would be out of line if they go above and beyond what is expected.

Tipping is way out of control.

I have been towed once on Mother’s Day. The captain was not the owner. He was very courtious, and extremely helpful. After we got the boat on the trailer and out of the water, he even insisted on helping to make sure everything was secure for the ride home. This was all free since I am a member. I tipped him $40. I felt in my heart that I should do that.
Bring on the 2-3 chop!
“This was all free since I am a member…”
That makes it not free…

I think its up to the individual and the service they receive.
A buddy and I were towed into Georgetown from the entrance to the channel few years back. Long tow and the captain did a great job.
We gave him a bottle of Crown back at the landing to show our appreciation.
TowBoatUS came to my rescue on a Sunday morning with rain POURING down! The guy was as friendly as could be and was there within 20 minutes. I gave the guy a tip.

Seatow has helped my 3 times in 2 years and could not have been more professional and courteous.I always tip the capt and try to point out a few fishing spots along the way.I want Seatow captains to be HAPPY to come get me when I need them.

I get my Car serviced and always give a $20 tip.Next time service they run out to get me settled in.I appreciate the attention and can afford to tip. That’s the key word here!! Can you afford to tip for any service you get? Or are you one cheap bastard that expects a free hand out every time. I know people like that and I stay away from them.I learned a long time ago the more you give the more you receive. It’s the lords way!!
