Title for Canoe

Im thinking about buying a canoe and putting my trolling motor on it. The only problem is the canoe does not have a title… Is it hard to get one for it? Ive heard for bigger boats its a long and expensive process but would the same standards be applied to a canoe?

I just went through this with my canoe and gave up and ordered a new (and, bigger/better) canoe.

First, you will need to get the hull ID off your canoe. If it doesn’t have a hull ID on it, you will need to apply for one.

But first, you’ll have to demonstrate the origin of the canoe. If you bought it and still have the certificate that came with it (the “bill of sale” sort of document that the manufacturer gives), then you will be sitting pretty. If you don’t, you need to call the DNR down at Fort Johnson Rd and talk with them.

They told me that I needed to submit an Affidavit of Support, and I’d be assigned an investigator, and he’d determine what the next step is. My canoe is an old no-name fiberglass with no hull ID and it was given to me by a friend in Raleigh. I gave up and said no thanks, I wanted to upgrade anyhow.

Well, sounds like I’ll just have to be paddling it, thanks for the help!

I ran into this exact same situation about 5 years ago and had no problem at all. I didn’t have any receipt as I had purchased it from Dick’s a few years prior and didn’t even think about a trolling motor at the time. I do remember I had to go to DNR with a picture of the hull number on the canoe and then sign some papers saying where and when I purchased it. I was out of there in no time.

If your canoe has a hull ID tag, I would give it a try.

Striperskiff is probably giving you good advice— if you have a hull ID, give it a shot.

If you don’t, it will probably be an aggravating road.
