Well I tried the Seafoam using a gallon jug per instruction of the other thread. Took boat out and it didn’t run any better , probably worse . I remembered someone saying to change the fuel filters and I did today (well the big one inside of the boat) I probably need to change the filter on the engine if I can find one in the upstate
Now to see what came out of the filter .
I drained the gas from the top three carbs but could not get to the screw on the bottom one . I hope this will be good enough after replacing the engine filter .
Is there a filter in the fuel tank of a 175 Scout ?
I still managed to get some good eating Spots from Keowee
I wouldn’t run that boat till you can get all the carb bowls drained, filters drained and bad gas out of the tank. You should probably put a racor filter with the clear bowl so you can see things like this before the get into your motor. You are taking the chance on blowing your motor by running it like that.
FP,
How long has your boat sat unused? When was the last time you changed your filter? Are you using anything like Stabil (blue) or Startron? I agree with changing the filter, dumping bowls, Seafoam will help run the gum out of the carbs. You need to pump the fuel out and use new fuel. If you only have a small amount add 93 octane and consider changing a new filter after running 2 tanks. There is no filter on your gas tank.
I change my fuel water filter 2x a year and haven’t had any problems using ethonal fuel. I put additives in when I can remember but I probably use my boat about 3x more than the average guy so the fuel is in constant rotation. Use that fuel in a lawnmower.
pawayne , caught them on Bill Norman plugs that I custom paint . Lost over 8 more at the boat because I didn’t take thee time to set the drag (Spots go crazy when they see the boat.
steelytom I thought of using an inline clear filter , would that work , I’ll Google the racor filters . The boat has pint size filter next to the engine in the battery compartment , where the stuff in the first picture came from .
ssflounder , I purchased the boat about 2 months ago , it sat in the carport for over a month because it was to hot to fish .The former owner said it had been 6 months since it was run (about 2 times) and it sat for 6 or 7 months before not being run. I have been out in it 3 times for short runs and noticed it doesn’t run right , so now trying to fix the problems .
I just put a new filter on the boat but it has not had gas run through it . I was waiting on advise from people here .
I don’t mind losing the gas but how do I pump it out . The boat has a 32 gal tank and I put 7 gal in to fill it up when I got it . The tank sits right under the center console which has a million screws holding it down with sealant.
Before I run it again I want to fix all I can so as to NOT mess things up any worse .How to pump the old gas out is the next step and to get to the bottom carb drain screw . any suggestions.
Thanks Sid
If you have a typical spin on fuel filter, you can buy a direct replacement that will be two parts. First, is a filter that looks just like the cartridge that is on there now except that is has no bottom and has threads to accept the clear sight bowl. The second part is the clear sight bowl.
The two piece stack is a little taller that a single filter. So, provided you have enough room under where the filter mounts, remove the old filter, spin on the new filter cartridge, spin on the new sight bowl.
Note, however, that the sight bowls are plastic and have a plastic petcock hanging our the bottom so you can drain off any water that accumulates. The little valve in the bottom is quite fragile on mine. I rigged up a protective collar to keep anything from hitting it.
Buy a cheap electric fuel pump at NAPA and remove the bulb and put pump in line and pump out entire tank, refill with high test no eth gas.
I hope your boat doesnot have a fiberglass tank if it has replace it ASAP to stay out of deep"S"
I’ve got a 5/8" hose that I can stick down in the fuel spout and have an electric fuel pump with gator clips to a 12v battery you can build one from an auto store for about $25. I’ve used mine about 5x on various projects. The problem usually isn’t getting fuel out but where to store it? You can remove the check valve (primer bulb) and connect the fuel pump there as well. Once you get good gas it’ll probably run like a top. I’d still recommend changing your fuel filter after 2 tanks run through it. Also mix heavy on seafoam the first tank to break up any gum build up in the carbs.
The bottom bowl drain is usually a PITA what kind/size motor? Ususally the upper cowling has 4 screws and you can pop them off to access. Or if you can access the two screws holding the carb on just take the carb off to drain the bowl.
If using a regular style filter be sure to fill it with gas and let it sit for a little while before installing it. This acclimates the filter to the gas and stops most of the water.
With that much fuel, I would take it over to seel’s and let them drain/dispose of the gas for you. And be very careful using an electric pump with gasoline.
Thanks folks
I took the gas line loose from the water fuel separator filter and put a smaller hose inside of it . Then put the small hose through the drain plug in the boat , wrapped a rag around where I fill the tank and give it a shot of compressed air . This started the draining of the gas tank . Got out 21 gallons into 5 gallon buckets . The gas didn’t have much water (maybe 2 spoons full) and no dirt . Saved it in 5 gallon gas cans maybe for the lawnmower . It doesn’t smell old .
Anyway Chris are you saying to get the carbs completely rebuilt before running ? Or would a test drive with new fuel do if it runs better .
it sits in the carport waiting , new water fuel separator filter , carbs drained and empty gas tank …
i personally can not suggest running engine without rebuilding carbs and having them cleaned from the inside out.
you just have to much junk in the system to risk it, but thats just my opinion
Not trying to be smart but why do people think seafoam is good for ethanol water problems? the way I read it, its good for decarboning rings and degumming carbs or injectors…not a gas treament.
