To those that read this thread. My buddy and I were fishing a spot on the Wando Sunday afternoon. We were catching some nice trout in front of a little feeder creek. A guide in a light brown Ranger flats boat was maybe 500 to 700 yards down the river from us for at least an hour. Later on, he came up the creek and started fishing a few grass beds behind us. The guide saw my buddy and me catch several nice trout just in front of the feeder creek. I wasn’t ancored but was using my trolling motor to hold us in position. The next thing I know, the guide pulls his boat beside us, no more than 20 yards away. This is where the story gets good. The guide says to me, “Hey, are you going to ancor up there or are you going to move on down the river?” I told him that I wasn’t going to ancor but was going to fish this spot for awhile. Then he says, “Well, the trout are right off of the point there and I’ve been waiting for the water to get right so that we could fish it.” I said, “No @#@#, we just showed you two are three of them.” Then the guide says, “But we’re fishing a tournament and we’d like to fish there.”
A few minutes later, a game warden pulled up. I know this guy and he had seen the guide move right in on us. I heard him when he went to speak to the guide. The guide proceeded to complain to the game warden about us being on “his spot”. That’s when the game warden told him that he had witnessed the whole thing and told him to go find somewhere else to fish.
If you hire a guide, make sure that they have more than one hole. If not, ask for your money back.
I was fishing a spot in a similar manner (on trolling motor) on the Wando when a big white bassboat with three guys was approaching about 100 yds down river. When he got within about 50 yds of me, all three stopped fishing while he made a large arc around me with his trolling motor, giving plenty of room, then resumed fishing once he was about 50 yds away. I wish more people showed that type of courtesy.
And guides are doing it to each other so don’t feel left out. Heard a story about 2 guides catching trout in the wando and another one watching it take place and the next day the latter is in the spot before the first ones can get back to it. The Wando does hold some nice fish. I may have to venture up that way on friday and lean on some people myself.
How close is too close? We were fishing a dock and oyster bar and ran out of bait. Left the spot and caught more bait. Came back to spot and another boat was 175 yards away using a trolling motor working his way towards us. We anchored out away from the dock. When he got near us he said we were jerks and we cut him off. I did not know if he was coming all the way to us or if he was going to go up in a creek about 50 yards up. I simply responded I can’t read your mind and did’nt know where you were going. Told him I would let him go between us and the dock and we would wait. He just said Thanks but no thanks. So?? Who was in the wrong?
It is amazing how much anger transpires between fisherman and boaters out on the water. We all just need to use basic courtesy. Being out on the water if a privilege so it kills me when people get so pissed off at little things. It is also sad how many jackasses cannot abide by this common practice…
CooperRiverMan, you are are right…you had no idea he was going to fish that exact line…he could of been done fishing or was planning to go somewhere else but instead he went straight down, you were unaware and were already in place, and you are right “you cant read his mind”…The guy should of fished his line until he was within the boundary and casually went somewhere else…Or he could of fished that line between you and the dock…Some guys need to just chill out, and enjoy the ride…
The Guide was probably fishing the RedBone tournament as it was in town on the 14-16. I saw a few of the guides fishing it myself while I fished this weekend. I used to get pissed when people snaked me on a spot but the Wando has soooo many good spots I usually just move on and shake my head in disapproval. I feel your pain but unfortunately it is something that happens often to alot of us. Everytime people do this to me on a school of reds i just barely put the engine in the water and spook everything off the flat to thank them.
■■■■■■■■, All jokes aside I am sorry that happened to you. It makes all guides in the area look bad when something like this happens. You would think a guide that has “fished that area” his whole life would have more spots that produce fish for him on “tournament days”.
