Epirb, hand held VHF/GPS, all other safety equipment I could carry in a 20’ boat made it to the ledge and back.
My dad came into town from Virginia and decided to take him offshore fishing. Left Remleys at 5AM and headed for the outcrop. Seas were fine until about 40 miles out. Then the 2’ seas NOAA forecast turned to 3’ x 5sec and steep. A little tough in a 20’ boat but we still were able to make about 22 knots. Slow trolled N to SW Banks with only 2 knockdowns. Both cutoffs. Decided to bottomfish in 125’. Big triggers and blackfish (18"+). Slinger dolphin schooled under the boat and we picked at them with a small spoon and light spinning gear. What a blast. Could have filled the boat with 10lb to 12lb dolphin but my dad was getting sick over the side. Last dolphin hit a double hook drop rig as I was sending it to the bottom. Largest bull dolphin of the day (15lb) hit it on the way down and surfaced through the air with the 16oz sinker behind him. Got it into the boat and I had a mishap with the second hook on the bottom rig.
From now on, I will ALWAYS carry bolt cutters as standard equipment on my boat.</font id=“red”></font id=“size3”>
I ended up driving boat back home, cut off the neck of the hook, and pulled the hook out myself in one swift motion. Today, no worse for the ware.
The ride in was actually nice. Made 27 knots in 3’ seas. If only my dad hadn’t gotten sick, I might still be cleaning dolphin!
148 miles round trip and burned 52 gallons. I usually burn less than that but we were climbing some steep waves coming in. That left me 32 gallons in reserve so still a nice cushion

We ended up bottom fishing 4 miles N. of Edisto Buoy in 125’ and the buoy info showed 2.6 - 3’ and very steep for the time we were out there. The WX on the trip in said that 41004 was measuring a wave height of 3’. Good thing is, my dad, even though sick, said he never felt unsafe in my Grady. He wished that he could have held on for another hour or so. We really could have filled the boat with slinger mahi because they were schooling under the boat and chasing bait on every single drop. All in all, a fun day!
Whistling Dixie, you bet I LOVE that Yamaha 4 stroke. It is so quiet and fuel efficient when you get the proper H.P. for your boat. Almost 3MPG in the conditions we faced was pretty darn good. Also, left motor running while bottom fishing so all in all, pretty good. I usually get 3.3 - 3.5 on really calm days but I run it at 4000 RPM which, for my F200 matched to my 20’ boat, seems to give me the best MPG.
nice job…curious minds would like to know two things…#1,can you make 22knots while sitting in capt chair in that boat or do you have to stand? #2, are the scuppers above water while stopped with the v-6 yammi? Nice looking boat by the way…

#1 Yes, I sat down most of the way, seat pulled all the way forward. Sat on way in also making 27 knots.
#2 Scuppers are indeed above the water line and the boat runs VERY dry. While trolling we were taking several waves each minute over the bow and the boat was always dry. Bilge pump never did have to come on and when I pulled the boat and pulled the plug, there was very little water.
