To the south (late report)

Had such a great day Saturday I had to post.
Got up at 3am. Not sure why I was fired up so early. Headed out at 3:30 and was in my spot by 5. Fished for a while and nothing was moving. Everything was silent. No wind, no light, no birds, nothing. Waited for first light around 6:30.

Moved to a few spots and finally found them around 7am.

Here is how my morning went:
7:15 - 12" Bluefish, mudminnow under cork
7:40 - 15" Trout, mudminnow under cork
7:57 - 30" Red, shrimp on jighead
8:28 - 15" Trout, mudminnow under cork
8:59 - 27" Red, shrimp on jighead
9:02 - 14" Trout, mudminnow on jighead
10:11 - Triple reds. 21, 24 and 24. The first one hit and I grabbed the pole, started reeling when the next pole hit. I thought I was tangled, then the second pole started screaming and I knew it was on. The first fish swam under the 2 other lines, I thought I’d end up with a huge tangled mess and have to pull both fish in on one pole. The second fish went on a big run and spooked a whole school. The water was full of fish, fish were everywhere, the water boiling, and thats when it happened… The 3rd pole bent full over and took off.
I just stood there in awe of all that was happening. Smiling from ear to ear. My first triple red. I had to stop and gather myself to make sure I didnt do anything stupid and lose this.
I adjusted the drag on the other two poles and focused on the one in hand. Pulled in the first 21", got him netted and released and moved on to the second. Untwisted the lines of the 2nd and 3rd poles and got number two in and released 24". Finally pulled in the last fish. Real big fighter and didnt give up easily.

Holy cow man. That is awesome! Good for you.

Thanks Raiser,
I read alot of reports on here, some good, some bad, some really good. While I was fortunate enough to have everything fall into place, this is more of a once in a lifetime event for me. I know I will remember it and appreciate it. We all spend alot of time on the water hunting for places hoping to get just one. Sunday was a pretty good day for me on the Ashley with 3 catfish and 2 underslot reds in 6 hours.

Anyways, thanks for letting me share. Sometimes it’s to good not to.

Excellent report and really nice pictures:sunglasses:

Awesome day, getting up and getting an easily start sounds like some of my trips. That’s where the similiarities stop. Don’t remember havering that kind of action for sometime. Great trip

Looks like you were using a wire leader…is that what you used on all rigs?

GREAT JOB!

Congratulations!! That was certainly a day to remember!! I’m smiling just reading about it!!

Timestamps are from me texting my cousin a play-by-play. Basically rubbing it in to ensure he doesn?t back out of our next fishing trip. Needless to say he got the point and doesnt like me very much right now.

No wire. I dont think it’s fair to the fish if the line breaks. Once you see a red trying to pass a 24" wire leader with beads, well, it’s just not nice.
15 or 30lb Seagars premium flouro leader with 20lb Spiderwire EZ braid main line (blue box). Not the most abrasion resistant, but you can twist it all day with no wind knots, lays flat, casts like crazy, and doesn?t sink into the spool as much as other braids.
