Hey guys, anybody using Toad flies for black drum? I was looking at a pattern in an older FFSW mag I have and thought it might make a great fly when the blackie’s are holed up in deep water in the fall.
I don’t see why they wouldn’t… I was fishing 11-Mile resivior in Colorado and me and this guy were about 50 feet apart working two seperate pools… those trout didn’t want a dang thing we had…we could see them rising to our flies but they would just turn their nose up and go back to their spot… I pulled out the “trash fly” , a joke that I tied the night before… I was tying poppers for Bream and when I put the glue on the hook it fell into my trash can and got all kinds of scraps of fur and such on it… I let it dry and stuck it in my box… I caught so many trout that day on that fly sometimes it’s something different that they tear up… I say throw a few in your box… you never know what’ll hit 'em…

Don’t see why not. I would make it darker and more crabby than shrimpy if you know what I mean. Heavier lead eyes than normal too.

Try the toad, but build the head BIG. Blacks seem to like big, bushy flies that pussh some water around. We’ve had success on a “rag-head” style fly with feathers/maribou out back and a big wool head. Toad should work real well.
Thanks guys, thats what I figured. I haven’t really heard of anyone using toads for much up here but I’ve had a little luck on some other species with 'em, so I guess we’ll find out this fall!
