Tohatsu 25hp 2 stroke questions

I’m looking at picking up a 1996 25hp 2 stroke Tohatsu for the Creek Rat. The motor is in excellent condition but does not have a spark. The guy wants $400 for it but I’m thinking about getting it if i can pick it up for $300 or less. He got it from someone who was selling to pay overdue rent and was told it ran well. When he got it home, it did not fire up and he doesn’t know what’s wrong with it. I know it’s a big risk buying it without spark but if I can dump a few hundred into it and get a Tohatsu dealer/service center to give it a tune up, diagnose and fix the spark problem, it might be worth it.

I haven’t seen the motor yet, but assuming it’s got good compression and is in as good of shape as the pictures show, I might get it.

Does anyone have any experience with these motors?

I would not assume anything. Wish you the best tho if you buy it. Get it checked out 1st IMO.

Do enjoy watching the boat build. Good luck Rap!

No fire on any cylinder usually means stator problem, need new stator. No fire on one cylinder usually means coil problem. If you know how to use an ohm meter you can test them easily. Find which one is open and just replace the part. If its the stator its usually more expensive, but I’m not sure of price. Find out how much those two are and go from there.

Could also be plugs, or if it has been sitting for a long time…a gummed up carb.

Chris, Tohatsu’s are very good engines. They made many of the smaller Mercurys for years, At that price it would be hard to go wrong, I’d buy it if you don’t, assuming it has good compression

It could be something very simple, like the kill switch, or the neutral cut out switch, if you haven’t checked it yourself, ya just never know what people don’t know  Worse case would probably be the stator, as Tigerfin said. Still well worth the cost of repair and more.

I’ve never know a gummed up carb to keep the engine from having a spark:question:
