Tohatsu and other smaller outboards.

If you were going to be buying a 5-10hp motor, probably new, what things would you look for? This would be for a 15ft jon boat to fish both fresh and salt (inshore).

I will be using this motor 2-5 times per month, so it’s going to be moderate in usage. It certainly won’t collect dust.

I keep seeing good reviews on Tohatsu. Anyone else have any experience with them? I’m more interested in reliability than I am startup price.

Also, where would you consider looking for one locally? I can get a new 9.8hp Tohatsu shipped for around $1,900 but would rather buy locally. I don’t know much about dealers around here, and I’m not totally sold on Tohatsu. Would consider another brand.

Thoughts?

Most of the big name outboards (Mercury, Yamaha, Evinrude)in that size range are very similar if not made by the same manufacturer in China. Buy a brand that is supported locally by someone you trust.

Tohatsu is a very good outboard and have been in business for a long time. They also make all Nissan outboards, and Mercury 30 hp and under.

I know quite a few people who have them and love them.

dependent on your needs, and your boat set up.

i personally would suggest suzuki, or evinrude, but really any brand you trust.

another thing to consider is, if you can, go with a 4.6 hp or less motor(NON TAXABLE)

Tohatsu’s are bullet proof. Not sure about the newer ones, but on the older 10 hp models, you could increase hp by 50% by changing the throttle cam. (less than $20.00)
