Anybody know anything about these motors??? Im looking to buy a 14.5ft Ashcraft with a tohatsu 40. Should I beware of these motors. I know I dont see a lot of these motors which Im afraid isnt a good thing. Any info would be appreciated!
I have a Tohatsu 30, 4 stroke. I have had good service out of it. Some bad gas got into it lately and am trying to clean it out, but it still runs, just a little rough on idle. I was told that, up to a 40, they are all made in the same plant as Merc and another I can’t think of. I know a Merc prop works on mine.
They are the same as Nissan outboards. They are good motors and are very popular in some parts of the world. Do a web search.

The toughest motor I have EVER owned. I had a 50HP 2 stroker.
I practically abvused the motor, it NEVER failed to start.
I would let it sit for six months at a time between summers, add any kind of oil at times and that sucker would run.
Did I mention that sum bit ch was tough?
Fishing on the bottom is like having sex with the lights turned off. It feels good… but I wanna see it.

Thanks for the info. from the sound of it it seems like a good motor.
Scott I did notice it sounding a little rough on idle on this one as well.
Great motor I had a 97’ 40hp that I put a lot of hours on ran the thing hot two or three times, it was my first boat didn’t realize that was why it was shuting off. New water pump and good to go. Sold it to a buddy of mine two or three years ago and its still running strong. Its the loudest 40 ive ever heard.
