Boat and trailer weigh approximately 3-3500 lbs. I have shifted the post a little farther back and have room to go some more. Still seems like plenty of tongue weight. Trying to 0ptimize the towing characteristics a little.
Has anyone heard of a “formula” for getting the proper tongue weight?? I was figuring about 3-400 lbs for this trailer. But that’s just a SWAG. TIA. Rob
I usually judge it by the weight of the tongue when hooking up the trailer. When its’ not hooked to the truck, it should have weight on the jack/wheel, but should be able to be lifted to put on the ball if need be. You don’t want the boat to stand on it’s transom when on the trailer and not hooked up, and don’t want it so heavy you cannot lift it off of the ball if need be.
That’s a good judge for a small skiff or something similar. But you shouldn’t be able to lift the tounge up of a 3500 pound boat, unless you’re squating 400+ at the gym.
