I have to go gas up my boat later, so I may drop it in for a couple of hours at about 8 or so if the wind dies down some and it’s not storming. I’m just going to play it by ear. Been watching the hourly forecast all day and it’s been changing constantly.

If the weather holds - will head out with my First Mate for a cruise. No plans to fish with bait, but will have a spoon rod and fluke rod on board.
Friday evening we watched a school of fish (guessing small striper or bass) knock the snot out of a bait ball on the surface - main river channel near Goat. Herring leaping into the air and splashing water all around. Cool predator vs. prey stuff:smiley:
By the time I idled over with the Minn Kota to cast my fluke, the action was slowing down and then ended. No hook ups, but Renee got a kick out of the schooling.
Good luck tonight!

Hope you guys did better than me. Got in the water about 8:45 and trolled the big water. Hardly marked any fish at all, so I called it quits after about an hour and 1/2.

Strange, I talked to Todd (triton225) and he was out cruising yesterday and didn’t mark much of anything. At this time of year it’s usually pretty easy to find fish since most are below bomb.

why is it strange that Todd did not mark anything? how would he know? ha ha ha

From recent reports of fish now being marked on the bottom and now the couple of reports of lack of marks makes me believe fish are now in full blown summer pattern. They are starting to gather up in schools. Somethimes they will be so thick on the bottom that they will actually look like the bottom depending on your settings on the finder.
Where almost any hump has produced the last couple of weeks, you now have to THE hump that they are holding on. Everyone has their go to summer hump. Time to do so. Guess we will see tomorrow. .

It’s actually pretty cool to roll up to your spot, see a thick bottom and start dropping baits. All of a sudden you see fish 10’ off the bottom, and think cool a school moved in. Nope they were there all along, just time to feed. I have had the screen go from nothing to when they start moving around a full spaghetti. Using a light and drawing bait late after dark will send them in a feeding frenzy again. They’ll gorge themselves and then sit on the bottom.
At least that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

I have posted this before bit we have added some new people since the last time. This is an example of what Geronimo and I am talking about. The bottom at first glance would appear to be a “soft” bottom but is actually fish.

Also means it will start to get tough keeping bait alive in the lake.

The trick is to get them down quick. I use heavier weights this time of year. That and you can let the weight slide down the line 20-30 feet while you bait up. That way when the bait goes in the weight will slide down dropping the bait faster than you can freespool. Sometimes it gets tangled that way. But if the fish are biting, they’ll hit the bait even if it is tangled around another line.

Nope not much luck. 4 pull downs all short strikes and that’s it. Tough marking fish! Hopefully next trip will be better!

Good point Geronimo -

Yeah - from now through end of summer I keep the hook on an eyelet and count down to the depth I want to fish using a 2oz sinker. I’ll set up a couple of rods so the sinker settles under the boat, then hook up a bait and toss it over - gets down to the fishing depth very quickly.
Kudos to Fogman for sharing that tip with me a few years back

Thanks Dano, but I learned that trick from listening to club members and guides. If you can follow your line done in the cone, that’s another option. A good line counter reel can also help.
