regarding the article by Dr. Wenner that you recently linked in another thread, he mentions storing his cut bait in salt. I have read about drying/curing cut bait this way for later use. However, Dr. Wenner almost made it sound like he kept freshcut bait in salt for immediate use? Is this an acceptable way to carry and use fresh bait? It would surely beat hauling a separate bait cooler down to the beach (which is what I do since I don’t want to corrupt my “catch” cooler with that stank)
It sure is, especially shrimp. The cut bait starts to toughen pretty quickly. As a kid my folks would go to the shrimp boat docks, but a few pounds to eat and a couple pounds for bait. The dockmaster would salt the bait shrimp right there on the spot. They would also get some fresh mullet and have it salted.
We’d fish for a week putting the salted baits in the cooler overnight.
