So me and grandad decided to head out this afternoon to the toogoodoo it’s been about 2 years sense Iv been out there!#128513; Go out there had some blue crab and tried a two places Iv fished in the past didn’t have anything happen at both places. So the tide was rolling out and we decided to go look for some live bait and found some menhaden and ran to spot Iv fished in the past up off the main river nothing real special or nothing. And I get there drop down a menhaden on bottom rig with a 30lb leader and start getting some other rods set up to. So 10 min goes by and I see the rod pop a single time then starts to go over slow so I reeled down and pulled back easy felt like a nice fish don’t think he knew he was hooked and 30 seconds when by and he broke off never made a serious run. So rigged up and steel leader let that one sit out for another 15 min while I was busy messing with another rod. So I had the rod leaning up against the motor and cooler that I was sitting on, my back was facing the rod and sure rod got hit like a ton of bricks and was gone in the matter of seconds. Didn’t have it in a rod holder didn’t set the drag loose so I lost a nice shimano Calcutta that Iv had for about 6 or 7 years not a good feeling but it was my fault for not backing off the drag. Normally keep everything tight enough to pull out with my hand without putting to much pressure on but was wondering who’s been up there lately and knows what’s going on. Guessing big Bull or maybe bonnet head but always caught them in the middle of summer but just wondering what y’all think! Gonna go out tomorrow and make sure I do it right this time lol RIP to the Calcutta I lost it hurt my feelings!#128513;
Last year up at Ocean Isle I was on a creek off the intracoastal waterway and had two 7’ inshore rods in rod holders (land based, no boat) with mud minnows on a carolina rig. Nothing was happening so I went to the car and got my only other rod with me (10’ heavy surf rod with a 60’s model Mitchell 489 reel (a beast) and rigged it the same way, mud minnow on a carolina rig, and casted into the creek. I sat this humongous rod right beside me (like right under my arm, 4 inches from my hand) and I even tucked the reel face under the boardwalk i was sitting on so if something struck I would hear the reel slam the wood and grab it. Well, it got hit. And in one half of one second it when straight up about a foot off the ground before it even moved forward. So I’m looking at this happening at my head level now, then it shoots away but lands in the reeds and oystershells about 8 feet down a seawall. I climbed down and grabbed it and set the hook. i fought the redfish untill I could see it and it broke me off, It was only upper slot, maybe MAYBE over slot. Long story short, it doesn’t take much of a fish to send even a huge surf rod up in the air and out to the drink b4 you can form a thought.
No matter how many variables I have control over, I never expect a bite. I only hope.
If you were near the fallen trees or where the barges used to be tied up, chances are it was a big red or a shark. Sorry to hear about the rod and reel. Maybe you can go back and try dragging for it with a rod spooled with heavy braid and couple of treble hooks. You never know.
