Top Water Lures

I have read various posts from folks here at CF regarding the use of top water lures. I have no experience with such “bait” but would love to learn how to use them effectively. I have heard good things about the Heddon Spook series lures as well as some of the Rapala Skitterwalks. Is there a resource someone can point me to that will assist me in lure selection, best areas in which to use and what type of fish to target. I have learned that it would appear early morning and late afternoon seems to be the best times to use top water lures…not sure why. I know I am asking for a lot at one time so any info would be appreciated.

Overcast or low light situations, fish will feed on topwater as they are under cover and more stealthy to prey. Middle day or sunny day, no cover and easily seen by their prey.

Also, try the Yozuri bananna boat or a plain ol’ PoP-R

The spook and b Boat require a little technique whereas the PoP-R is really easy to use.
Something about a Spook and Boat reaaly sets em off though.

Oh, and target trout, reds, and even largemouth or stripers if in brackish water or fresh.

And the bluefish, gar, love em too if you are interested in that sort of thing…

Fishing on the bottom is like having sex with the lights turned off. It feels good… but I wanna see it.
Lights On!

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of dust with a rod in one hand and a beer in the other,
thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming…

WOW -WHAT A RIDE!!!

Thanks, I appreciate the information.

I have always had the best luck using Skitterwalks. Baby trout or Bone.

Dfreedom: I hope you continue to ask questions as they come to you. That is the beautiful thing about having a forum like this one. Don’t ever feel like you are putting anybody out. If you ever want to hook up for some topwater let me know. I’m always open to fish mostly during the week. Good luck!!

“Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s much more important than that!”

Thanks FishMarshal, I really appreciate it. I fished a lot as a kid with my Grandfather but kind of got away from it and have somewhat gotten started again. I really want to become a better fisherman so my kids will enjoy it more when we come down. It is hard to explain to children that fishing is not just a matter of showing up and catching fish. When you don’t live in an area, it is hard to know where to fish, what bait to use and how to fish it. If you are serious, I would love to get together sometime if you would not mind doing a little teaching. I am actually more flexible during the week as well.
