What color/pattern do you guys like for the skitterwalk?

Does anyone use a snap swivel to attach the lure to the leader or is that not a good idea? I have been using a Rapala knot but a swivel would be nice to switch out lures. Thoughts, experiences?

I don’t think color matters as much as the size and pitch of the rattle. That being said I use a trout, bone, or mullet color. I caught the most fish on a mullet color that I left in the sun and turned ugly brown. That thing was so scratched up! A bluefish cut it off last year. I shed a tear

Other question. I mostly fish tw at dawn. They will hit all day if there is bait around and if you witness them crashing bait. Overcast helps but they will hit when it’s sunny too. Also don’t hesitate to try a suspending bait. Subsurface topwater!
Doug: I use a loop knot or spit ring. But it probably doesn’t matter if you used a snap swivel. Think about it. They hit this lure with 2 or 3 big trebs hanging off it. That’s not natural! The action of a tw I think puts their reaction bite into overdrive

Good point, thanks Dave.

I really like the badonkadonk and the super spook jr.i added a split ring to my spook jr and get (at least it seems to be) better action out of it, too.
Spook and Sammy. Anybody ever use a buzz bait for reds? I’ve got a homemade one that I think could work. High lift for a slow retrieve.

I’ve heard a lot of people say that. I had the pleasure of meeting Chris O’Neill in Boca Grande a few years ago. He was the number 1 inventor of it, along with Bill Dance, IIRC. Anyway he gave me a dozen of them as samples and showed me just how to work them. I went into it with high confidence and a professional coach, still have yet to catch even 1 dang fish on it. I’m sure it’s me and not the lure [:I] It works for others. Must have to hold your mouth just right or something. I leave them in the box and hook on a live shrimp right now:smiley:
The old school bass lures all work well for reds and trout. Rebels, Rapalas, Bang-o-lures all are great TW lures. You have to change out the hooks and rings for saltwater, but those lures have been catching fish for 40 years. Color doesn’t matter, only contrast. They keep catching fish long after the color is chewed off. Fancy colors catch fishermen, not fish. Light on light days, dark on dark days. And don’t forget the live shrimp:smiley:

Make sure to be fishing a leader to prevent the braid from wrapping the hooks. Trust, i fish topwater at least once a week, and 8"-1’ of leader makes all the difference.
I use a snap swivel sometimes, just make its a decent one thats semi small, and will stay closed. If affects the action a little bit, but you’ll get used to it & correct it
