topwater at the riverfront park this evening

i am officially a topwater addict… someone save me :stuck_out_tongue:

my wife wanted to take the dog down the street to the park. ok sure but im taking my pole! got there and conditions looked perfect… nice and calm… sun going down… mullet were jumping everywhere

made several casts along the grass line… no takers. kept plugging along (lol) for a 5 minutes or so and began seeing several blowups just up the creek. cast down a bit from the splash and BLAM something just destroyed it. ended up just being a decent sized bluefish. had one more hit after that which got a nice “wow what was that” from the wife

going in the morning haha… im hopeless

Another one is hooked so to speak…it’s hard to beat seeing the fish hit a top water lure!!

Which waterfront park are you referring too ??

Bragging may not bring happiness,
but no man having caught a large fish,
goes home through the alley.

Top water is addicting ! I like when a trout knocks the plug a couple feet out the air !

I think he’s talking about Riverfront Park in North Charleston on the old navy base .

19’ Cobia bay

yup the one in north chuck

tried this morning but no takers. only saw 2 blowups… but there were mullet literally everywhere

im thinking the spot is better on higher tides. ill have to test that theory out

Nothing beats TW! That’s a great method BTW. When you see a topwater strike on some mullet, cast as fast as you can in the close vicinity. I have had a lot of success that way. That fish will be coming back to pick up the fish he wounded or disoriented.

thats because the initial strike is not to eat…its to kill.

PS you’re correct, higher water is a little more conducive to fishing a topwater plug off the bank.

Okay, this may be a stupid question and maybe even a different category but bear with me. We were out the jetties Sunday and saw bait busting the surface all over the place (I assume menhaden). Would it have been worth my while to toss out a spoon or some kind of topwater into all that?

DFreedom…definitely worth it…we’ve caught spanish mackerel, blue fish, ladyfish, etc doing that. We followed
a baitball all the way down the jetty one afternoon catching about 25 blues…great fun on light tackle. I’ve also seen
tarpon explode through schools of menhadded, but have never hooked one.

Doug, I agree with Biker, but make sure there are not also Cormorants crashing the bait as they will dive on your spoon and you will catch a very angry bird! Ask me how i know
