topwater first - saltwater striper

First topwater strike. And first saltwater striper hook up and landed.

Sunday morning, falling tide, super spook jr., bone color. Caught in the Charleston area, upstream of I-526.

Bent the stock hook, but drag was set loose enough so the hook held.

Was fishing the other side of the dock when I got a bad wind knot. As luck would have it, I heard a lot of topwater commotion on the other side of the dock; must have lasted for over 60 seconds. (This was the first clue that stripers might be in the area). It took an eternity (two minutes really) to cut line and retie. All was quiet and I figured I missed my opportunity. But after 3 casts on the other side of the dock, the fish just exploded and inhaled the spook. Swam different from a spottail, and on its second to last run it surfaced close enough to see that it was a striper. Been a dream to catch a saltwater striper, and I did not expect it today. Was looking for trout, but i’d take one of these for 10 trout.

Only fish of the morning (fished 30 minutes).

Nice and congrats, a saltwater striper and on top! The Super spook jr hooks suck. First thing i do when i buy one is take off the hooks and replace w #4 mustad KVD triple grips. Those SSJ stock hooks will bend on a 20 inch red!

Bravo! The best topwater strike you can get inshore IMO. And I second what jimmyaadams said above

Great Job. That super spook jr works wonders.

Fine job. How big was that hook bender anyway?

Thanks!

Striper was 27 inches. Not sure about weight.

They are deeper now, and not active on top. Not seen another that big all fall.

They have been stocking the upper Ashley, above the RR trus with stripers for a few years. I have been catching them off my dock and one in a cast net.

Awesome report!
