Topwater Redfish - Porpoise Attacks Redfish Video

FULL VIDEO - https://youtu.be/O49N4tLRnGA

June 26, 2019 - Headed out with Tommy to get on the afternoon bite at sunset on the Wando. We got lines out at 6:30pm and fished till 8:30pm. The bite was epic. I rigged up my Van Staal VSB100 on a new Star rod that I got on sale at West Marine. I wanted to start using it more offshore and brought it along to see how far it would cast. I fished a Mirrorlure with a short Jinkai 50lb leader and Diamond Orange Crush 20lb Braid as a main line. I caught a 28" red on the 1st cast and continued to catch 2 more reds and a trout. A hungry porpoise came up to the boat and looked at us while we released the last redfish. The redfish made a fatal mistake when I threw it in the water and swam back towards the porpoise. The porpoise grabbed the redfish, started tossing it out of the water and then ate it

The Van Staal was rigged with - a Mirrorlure - https://amzn.to/2Xep4JZ with a short Jinkai 50lb leader - https://amzn.to/2FC5vAs and Diamond Orange Crush 20lb Braid - https://amzn.to/2JoX8cX as a main line.

That is incredible. I hope my first red on top is that big

What Tide were you fishing? I fish that bank right where you are. Have you ever caught them about 100-200 yards further up river right where you get to the big creek? There are oysters guarding a big flat. I’ve seen them tailing in there but never had the rod to get it far enough. Using a 7’9 NRX now that has the power to get it back there just haven’t tried it yet.

What Tide were you fishing. Looks like a mid Tide as best I can tell wondering if it’s rising or falling.

There are a few porpoises that just hang by your boat there waiting for throwbacks. Made me have to move the last couple times i was around there.

We fished the out going tide. I sight fish all the areas around there on both sides of the Wando until I find them. My boat will get into inches of water so I fish in the shallowest of areas. I use the NRX rods also. They can cast a long way. That day I used a hefty setup that I rigged up for offshore and it ended up catching all the fish, LOL.
