Yesterday we found a school of hungry big reds hitting on the surface. They hit the spooks and chugbugs we tossed to them. Tried the fly and all they would do is boil at it or follow it to literally the tip of the rod. Tried different retrieves to no avail. Tossed topwater mullett fly and a white gurgler. I guess what i’m gettin around to is, if you got into the same situation, what would be your go to topwater fly???
wiggle minow, bubble head, pencil popper, and then bob’s banger in that order.

Gurgler. But you tried that already. 2nd would be a lipless Gurgler fly I came up with. 3rd would be a Dahlberg Diver then finally a Crease fly.

agreed, i don’t know why they would hit the conventional topwaters and not the fly but usually if they wont rise for one floatin fly pattern they wont for some different pattern, switch to subsurface or try somethin that makes as much noise as the chugbug and the spook like a big collared dahlberg
