We’re going on a Keys trip in June and rather than taking a motor boat this time we’re taking kayaks. The other night my wife asked what she was going to use and I said the old one (kinda crappy, cheapo, starter sit inside). Well, she said, “how much is a new kayak”? Long story short, she wants to buy a new kayak that she can use not only down there but in the future.
I have narrowed it down to 2: W.S. Tarpon 100 and the Perception Pescador Pro 100. We already have two longer fish-ready kayaks but, ultimately I would outfit this one to fish as well. I’m really torn between these two as they are both good boats and have some great features. Just looking for some first-hand insight if anyone has any.
We’re going to be in Charleston this weekend so I plan to go by Timeout to see if they have either in stock and take a look in person.
Haven’t considered a SUP Dave. She would probably feel more secure sitting in a yak and not sure she wants to stand for long periods of time.
Tommy, I know the shorter boats don’t track as well as the longer ones do. My first objective is to find something she is comfortable paddling and can handle. At 4’10" and 100 lbs. I was just thinking a 10’er. I would not rule out either of the above in the 12’ version, just can’t decide between the two.

I’ve also been shopping for a fishing yak. Torn between Ocean and Old Towne, about 13-14’ long. Any suggestions?

Looking at the Old Town Predator or OK Big Game? There are a few guys in our club that have them - they like 'em. Palmetto State Armory in Mt. Pleasant has some Predators - Chris Tweedy is the guy there and can probably give you a good deal or answer specific questions…
I’ve got a Ride 135 on a Malone trailer I’d part with
Mango colored angler with rudder, paddle, pfd, rod holder, etc and Bending Branches carbon shaft paddle

New that boat is around $1,000. The rudder adds another $150 or so, paddle $100+, PFD, rod holder AND trailer? That’s a killer deal. I’d ask for a 10% discount for the “mango” color but you’d like that yak Larry.

It does Larry
Everything you need to hit the water.
The rudder comes in handy on long paddles or dealing with a quartering wind. You don’t have to learn to do corrective strokes and just paddle.
There’s about $2700 out of pocket stuff right there
I also find the rudder handy when battling any decent sized fish. Getting towed around a creek by a 30+" redfish convinced me to add one. It is also nice to be able to steer with your feet if you are drifting with the current.
