Torsion Axle

I have a good amount of rust on my trailer axle. After pricing a new torsion axle I have been looking into various options. Someone suggested Por 15 rust paint. Looks like a good product. Remove all rust and coat with Por 15.

On to the question. I want to remove the torsion axle from the trailer to sand and paint. Is the torsion part of the axle going to be spring loaded? I really don’t have a good idea of how much tension is on the torsion bar. I am wondering if I take it off the trailer, if I will have problems getting it back on.

Thanks

If you are talking about taking the entire axle out from under the trailer, then no big deal to do that. Just jack the trailer up high enough and use jack stands to support it. Unbolt the axle from the trailer and slide it out. Removing the torsional damper from the axle is another story!

However, if your axle is bad enough that the metal is getting thin, I would buy a new one. There’s just too much liability should the axle break while towing your boat down the highway.
